On the inner shaft (the short stubby one that goes into the transmission) is there a snap ring or lock ring to secure it. I see that the shaft has a groove, but don't know if it uses a ring that is integrated with the differential, or I need to have a ring present.

If it needs a ring, any idea what it is or where to find one?

There is a spring ring inside the gearbox, so the drivers are just gently tapped in to seat the ring on the driver shaft. So, in other words, you don’t put any clip on the driver shaft before tapping in into the gearbox. Hope that helps! ;ol;
