To post photos, either add them as an attachment or host them on another site and link directly to them using image tags.

To attach a picture:

When you post a reply, if you scroll down a little below the reply box you'll see an option called Attach Files. In this is a section called Manage Attachments. Click on that and an upload window appears. There are 4 sections, indicating that you can attach 4 pictures per post. If you click on the Browse button a window showing your computer files will show up. Navigate to where the picture is saved, select it and then click upload. The file size is limited to 50Kb - if it is too large it will tell you. See below for details on how to resize.

To link to a picture:

Using this method, the picture will show in the main body of the reply, and it allows for larger images. Find a site that offeres free image hosting - two of the most popular are www.photobucket.com and www.flickr.com . You can also use the Saab Central galleries: http://www.saabcentral.com/phpgallery/ .
Upload your image to the site using the Browse button method described above. Each picture will be assigned 3 addresses. There will be a [ URL] one, a < TAG> one and below them is an [ IMG] one. Click once in the [ IMG] address of teh picture to select it, then right click and copy (or whatever you have to do to copy on your machine). Back in the reply box on Saab Central, just click paste and what will appear is something like:

[ IMG] photobucket/JezzaSaab/pic1[ /IMG]

(I have put in spaces after the first brackets to stop it working now).

When you click submit, the picture will show in your post.

If you have the picture hosted elsewhere, you can right click on it and select Copy Image Location. Back on Saab Central, click the
icon to make an
.

Resizing images:

The most common monitor size is 17". These normally run a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. The first figure is the width of the entire screen, the second is the height. If you post a picture that is 1024 pixels wide, it will cover the entire screen, so there will be horizontal scroll arrows which appear on screen to see all of it. This is a real pain. The best compromise is to size the picture to 800x600 pixels or less, as this will fit comfortably on the Saab Central screen for most users.

Pictures posted on the web should have a resolution of 72 dpi. Pictures for print would need to be at least 300 dpi, but that takes more disk space. Most computers have some kind of imaging program on them - Windows has MSpaint or similar. Other free ones you can download are Irfanview, from www.irfanview.com/ , or for a very comprehensive open-source Photoshop substitute, the Gimp from www.gimp.org/ . All of these enable you to change the picture's physical size, resolution and file format.

All programs have a similar way of doing this, but there will be some minor differences. In Photoshop, open the picture. Go to the Image menu and then select Image Size. A window will appear with the image properties. In this example mine says width: 1770 px, height 1182 px. Below this it says Resolution: 300 pixels/inch (dpi). To resize, first change the resolution to 72 dpi. You will see that the physical size changes, becoming smaller. Ensure that the box is ticked to constrain proportions, and then change the width to 800 pixels. The height should change automatically. If it doesn't, set it to 600 pixels. Go to file, Save, and save it as a JPEG. Photoshop has an option of Save for Web which does the same thing. Pick a level of compression on the sliding scale - more compressed will be lower quality but a smaller file size.

Go to www.download.com and download the Faststone image viewer. Save your image to your "my pictures" folder and then run Faststone, this will allow you to resize your image by % or pixels. Save the resized image and link to here via the user CP options.

I did as you said, Jezzadee (file size was 36k), but nothing showed up when I tried to preview the posting. Is that normal?

From what I understood of what you described today, you can put pics in your posts as normal by using IMG tags linking to Photobucket, but you can't add to the Saab Central gallery because you never get the pop-up window to log in or add pictures. That sounds to me like a security setting on your PC has changed to block pop-ups. Various things can block pop-up windows, even legitimate ones. Most common is the Google toolbar, which blocks them silently IIRC. Firefox blocks them but asks you if you want to allow them, and gives you the option to alow all or certain sites. Zonealarm might need looking at, and in Internet Explorer, Internet Options > Security has a long list of things to check, one of which is allow pop-up blocking.

I went into my preferences and uploaded a under 30KB pic
for use as my thumbnail picture to the left side when you post.

But it's not there when I make a post, what am I doing wrong.

30k is too large for an avatar (that thumbnail pic at left). It should be:

The maximum size of your custom image is 92 by 70 pixels or 8.8 KB (whichever is smaller).
Other things to check are in the User CP section on the left of the toolbar - make sure you haven't ticked the box that says "do not use avatar".

Hi,

Mucking about with pictures is new to me so any help would much appreciated
I managed to shrink a picture I have to use as an avatar. Now I want to make it bigger again. I can get it bigger but it is very blurry...as far as I can make out this is to do with the resolution (ie from 72 dpi to say, 300) .
What am I doing wrong.

Shrinking an image throws some of the information away as you see when you try to enlarge it again. You should always keep the original large image (or at least until you're happy with the result of your changes). In your case, having shrunk the image too far, you should go back to the original and shrink it somewhat less. If you have deleted the original, I'm afraid you've had it...

Mind you some softwares have algorithms that make an enlargement more palatable. Like Photoshop. Still can't make gold from lead though.

Hey, so now that I've created a gallery in the SC photo galleries, how do I post it in a thread? I don't see anywhere where there's any img or url tags, and I've been looking all day...

Sounds like you've only got basic controls set up. When you click reply there should be a row of formatting icons up above the text box. One of these is a small picture of a mountain. Click on it and it does IMG tags. The world icon is the URL one, the speech bubble is quote. Alternatively just type the things out and paste in the link, which is what I do anyway.

To change the formatting controls, go to the User CP link on the top left toolbar. Pick edit options. Scroll to the bottom and choose Standard Editor - Extra Formatting Controls. Next time you click a post all the controls will be there.

In the SC Galleries go to the picture you want. Click to get the right size. Right click and Copy Image Location. Back in your reply, click the img logo or type [img]. Paste in the Image Location. If you typed it close the img tags with a forward slash like .

I think that just about covers it.
