I've recently noticed a persistent humming coming from the driver side wheel well of my 99 9-5. It occurs intermittently while the engine is off and constantly while it is on. I've attach a photo of the part that is making the noise. It is the small cylindrical piece located in front of and below the battery, denoted by a red arrow in the photo. Any ideas as to the problem and how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Does the picture come with an electron microscope? ;)

If its an auto gearbox its almost certainly the brake servo booster. Check the hose coming off it for integrity to see if there's a leak to cause the booster to run on. Also check under the engine shroud to see if the pipe that runs parallel across the top of the cam cover has no cut into it caused by the shroud chaffing. If the hose is fine the booster might need replacing.
