I recently purchased a 2001 93 SE and I love it . The only question I have is about CDS, original and burned copies. The owners manuel says only to use the orginal CDs in the CD player because of a problem with overheating of the CD player if you use burned CDs. Anyone know anything about this?

My wife uses CD-R's all the time. The sound will start cutting out if it gets too hot long before the player will be damaged.

She has had no problems, but my old Kenwood acted that way. Certainly not a Saab specific thing. Just the technology from that era.

I can only recommend CD-R's, though. CD-RW discs are written EVEN LIGHTER then CD-R's are and therefore cause the 'laser to work karder' and it generates even more heat.

Saabs note to never use anything but original discs is typical CYA type stuff.

Geez, ANOTHER MASS person?!?! What, do they just give Saabs away up there, or something?!?!

I have had the same issue with my 99 9-3. When I play burned CD's for a certain amount of time and they start to heat up they will definately skip. The player will start showing errors and when I replace the CD-R with an original CD it works fine. I may just replace my deck in hopes this will fix this issue.

Also as a side note, I use the SONY CD-R's as I find they have a high heat tolerance.

I burned music onto a cheap CD-RW (you know, the stack of 100 for about 10 bucks from a PC warehouse)

After about 20min. it started severely skipping to the point where I got out of the car, removed the CD, and flung the CD about 75 yards (it was a pretty sweet toss) into a pile of rubble/dirt at a home construction site.

Next I tested a Staples CD-RW, this works much, much better. I notice skipping on a few minor road bumps after travelling for about 45-50 min. listening to the same CD-RW. 10-15 minutes later, it seemed to skip on almost every bump on the road (I think I sneezed once, and it skipped ;) )

Long story-short; for me, CD-RW are just fine if you listen to it once and then switch to a "real" audio CD.

I knew someone would post and say that. :cheesy:
The CD-R's are better, though. As I said they are written darker and the system (that wasn't designed to read any of these kinds of discs) will not get as hot as fast.
Still better to buy a DAP/MP3 player. CD's are so year 2000! :cheesy:
I haven't bought any CD's since I got my Rio Karma 9 months ago.

CD-Rs aren't really darker, they're just more reflective than CD-RWs. The CD-R standard was written so that, in theory, any properly designed CD player ever made could read them. I have a couple of portables from the mid to late '80s that will play CD-Rs without a problem. CD-RWs just aren't reflective enough to be read in anything but players designed specifically for them.

Don't you know, Saabs come with every value meal at McDonalds around here. They stopped offering the 9-7x when customers started complaining about fuel mileage......

All the CD's that I put in my car are CD-R in an attempt to keep the originals in as good a condition as possible. I have had no problems with the Memorex discs at all ($20/100 CDs). Haven't even attempted CD-RWs because in the end they really are just a waste of money.
