Old style front brake calipers: vented vs solid piston housing differences?

86 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  jvanabra
I know the yoke has an extended slot, and I think the guide pins are longer, but supposedly the piston housing (6) is also different. It seems there are 4 different versions (2 for vented rotors and 2 for solid rotors).
However, comparing housings of a caliper from a 900 with solid rotors and one with vented rotors show no apparent differences. Perhaps the vented calipers I compared were previously rebuilt with the wrong housings, the differences between them are extremely small, there was something I missed in my measurements, or it's only different on paper.

Does anyone know what the differences between the differently numbered housings are?

I have the same question and same experience as you. I have both solid and vented housings on the bench, and look identical down the markings on the housing. I think it's very possible the differences were slight and overlooked during past rebuilds or something like that. Since none of the other components (outside of the yoke) seem to change, I can't imagine it's truly consequential. Search "voodoo" on this board - there is a huge recent thread about all this.

I made a few comments in that thread. It's a great repository of information. I saw you got the girling piston rebuild kit too. I'm curious as to what method you used to swap the adjuster mechanism?
I managed to get mine out by cutting the old piston in half with a dremmel and used a hammer and punch to clamp the indents of the new piston into the collar of the adjustor mechanism. It doesn't look as elegant as however the factory pressed it, but it seems to be holding. I also used a series of washers held on with the set screw to keep the spring from pushing against piston while I was tapping the pieces together.
I haven't tackled the rebuild yet.... I have four functional calipers, two on the car and two off, so the kit is sitting around waiting for when the ones I have fail.
