Hi All,
Jeff in Perth, Western Austratlia here.
Just got myself a 1993 saab 900i convertible, has a good service with Henley saab in Perth, bought the car private, has 188k on the clock.

Have searched the forums, but found no reference to the bleow.

1. changing gear from 4th to 5th ( yep, its a manual) it seems real easy to slip back into 3rd, is this normal?

2. After filling up with petrol, I can smell petrol when i get in teh car, after running off a 1/4 of a tank, the smell goes away.

3. I have heard that Keith McCracken in East Perth is ok for servicing, has anyone ever used them, or do i stick with my usual mobile mechanic?

4. Any other advice gladly accepted.

cheers

Jeff

That's quite a good low km-age for a 93 build classic 900.

None of my running 900's have had a manual trans, so can't help with this one.

Might be your car has a cracked fuel filler pipe somewhere between the filler neck and the inlet to the tank which lets some fuel spill into the boot space and that would give you a fuel smell for a while until it evaporates.

Keith McCracken's are highly regarded and recommended in the classic Saab community. They are regularly recommended when people in WA ask about servicing places in the SCCA club's forums.

welcome! :D

1: might i suggest pulling the gearshift boot up from the console, and check that the 3 screws on top of it, which are holding the gearstick in its housing, are tight.

2: i second what craig said.
there is also a vapour line going from behind the filler neck, when checking the filler hose also make sure that the rubber connections for the vapour line arent cracked.
the only other thing i can think of is that the sender unit or fuel pump have not been fitted correctly and are leaking fuel out when the tank is filled. to check these, remove the boot carpet (i cant remember its exact name, but the "floor" of the boot) and remove the service hole covers for the sender and pump (pump is the big cover, sender is the small one), once again do this after you have filled up. this is easy to do with a hatchback or notchback (sedan) not sure if 'verts are different
