Hey all, long story short, I was going to drop the top on my 'vert today, and it was clicking (sounded just like gears). I decided to shut it, but then once the top itself got close to being closed up against the tonneau cover, the motor would just keep clicking. So, we pulled the red lever to manually close it. But now the two latches under the tonneau cover won't latch to hold the top in place while we push it down. The only way we can get the latches to shut is if the tonneau cover is up, by turning the key off and on again, and then using the automatic roof button. But this is not working while we are actually pushing the roof down to latch in the closed position.

Any ideas? My car is falling apart all at once...

I could be wrong here, because I have a 2003 which has some differences with the top. But I think on mine if I have to shut the top manually, I can't latch the 5th bow. I can do everything else but the 5th bow will stay down on the cover, but unlatched.

Does the cover open at all? if so you might be able to see why the latches aren't functioning. If it does NOT open, you may have stripped the shear pin or the universal joint in the trunk that opens the tonneau cover.

That sounds like the same thing as mine. The cover used to open, but now it doesn't even grind or anything. The manual operation still works. Do you have any idea if this is something I can tackle by myself? I called Zimbrick SAAB in Madison and the guy was very vague on cost. I do think that I need to bring it to a dealer at some point (something with Tech 2 programming? I believe I read it in the owner's manual...)

The top WAS functioning with the button, but then it started clicking, at which point the top would stop moving. Now all I can hear are servos or something in the trunk, but no movement or grinding.

The 5th bow supposed to remain unlatched after closing manually. It's a way to get you to go to the dealer. Don't worry, driving around like this will NOT damage it, even with the windows down. Also, the top will no longer respond at all after closing manually. THe red lever trips the computer chips (microswitches, perhaps the SID?) and they must be reset with a techII

Okay. Thanks for confirming what I seemed to be finding...makes me feel at least a little better about this whole thing :lol:

The really annoying thing about it is that the SID beeps at me every 5 seconds, telling me to check latches:nono;

I'll post more when at a real keyboard but mine did not need reprogramming with tech ii. The u-joint and shear pin that opens the tonneau cover can be checked by opening the trunk and locating a little opening on the right crorner of the trunk lining just below the top right corner of trunk. It's Just below the weather seal around the trunk opening.

You can pull down the lining enough to see the ujoint.
If the joint is broken that should be obvious. But a sheared pin is not.

Have someone in the car operate the top switches to try and open the top. You may see the shaft on the right turning but the joint or left shaft not turning. If so you have a sheared pin on the joint.

The Saab fix is to remove the trunk liner on the right and remove the mechanism, drive the pin out and replace. It might be possible to do it in the car by drilling the pin out but you won't know when the joint and shaft holes are lined up.

The dealer did not know how to fix it. I had to fax them the Saab instructions. Next time I'd do it myself.
Do a search for tonneau cover not opening ujoint pin and you may find it. If I can I'll post a pic of the spot in the liner to check.

So in my case replacing the shear pin did not help.

My problem is that the first bow touches the tonneau cover when lowering the roof. It's not a big deal, if I exit the car and just give the cover a slight push back, the first bow drops down easily. However, I don't want to leave the car every time.

I thought replacing the shear pin would help but it did nothing.

Does anybody know where it's possible to manually adjust the tonneau cover angle? If it would have opened just couple degrees more vertically, it will work perfectly after.

search for a post by flyhop. this deals with latching and unlatching the fifth bow. it does not relate to operating the tonneau.

Latching/unlatching the 5th bow works fine, I tried giving direct power to the latching motor. However, the cover does not go too high or the first bow gets too far. The 1st bow touches the cover when lowering the roof.

i think you can get the sid to quit beeping at you by pulling out the number 5 maxi fuse from the small fuse box near the battery. keep in mind that pulling this fuse cuts power to the convertible top.
