When I shift from 4th into 5th sometimes, it goes into 3rd instead, even though I have the shifter in the correct area. (All my cars have been standard transf since I started driving 10+ years ago, so I know what I'm doing ;)). It's as though the whole gearbox in a way shifts (moves) over to the right. So when I DO get it into 5th (its usually hard as it hits between 3rd and 5th, so I press harder to the right then up), the shifter can physically move over to the left and right. This seems like the issue, as something inside is lose or moving, maybe internally in the trans?
I brought the car to three different mechanics and all of them say it's fine, but I'm assuming it doesn't happen when they drive it.
Thoughts? Thanks guys.

Sounds like one of the links is broken but my knowledge of transmissions is slim.
Thanks. How hard or pricey is the linkage to fix/replace?

Found the issue. One of the shifter cables (found right under the hood) came lose from it's holder. The pin was missing. Reattached and it's all good.
