I'm getting the message that coolant is low but the level is good when I check the tank. Is this due to the coolant sensor malfunctioning? Do I need to replace the whole expansion tank to correct this problem, or is the coolant sensor a separate assembly?

My 97' 900 SE had this very same problem and I never bothered with it.

You probably need to clean the sensor. Take the tank out and use various implements to clean the sensor float and the area around it. You'll probably want to clean inside the tank too using various creative tools once you see how much scum has accumulated in the hidden compartments.

Re-install. If that doesn't do it, you need a new reed switch. That's that part that the connector hooks on to. You can't buy it separately, you have to buy the whole tank...so a junkyard is usually the best source for a replacement.
