How we doing guys, got my chance on this. beautiful 1987 900 spg.. though I have no experience what so ever on these classics..

My question off the bat is if anyone can identify this sprocket/chain looking part for me? And why it is exposed?

Appears to be the flywheel. It's under a plastic cover (which appears to be warped or not fastened) on the radiator end of the engine. The engine, as you may know, is reversed from the usual arrangement, with the pulleys against the firewall and the clutch behind the radiator.

Yes it's the starter ring on the flywheel. The plastic cover on the clutch is not fastened down completely when it's not normally visible.
