I have the five speed. Returning from a 500 mile road trip yesterday I notice a "knob" at the top of the boot directly underneath the top knob on the gearstick. My fingers fit around it nicely and I can pull it up a 1/2" or so, and it springs back down to original position when I let go.

Without manuals, I know nothing. With manuals, my credibility is still questionable. :cheesy: Fortunately, there's this board.........is there any purpose for that knob?

That's kinda what I was thinking although I've never used it to shift into reverse previously and it has shifted acceptably well.........

ok, a few points.....

1, why has the gearbox been shifting perfectly well into reverse without the collar (its not a "knob") being lifted.....?

2, how long have you been driving the car before you noticed this rather essential part of the transmission (and i dont mean 500 miles, i mean, how LONG)?

what is it they say....? something about blissfull ignorance?

There is an adjustment in the shift lever that is out of whack. So, you have had some trouble getting it in to fifth, haven't you? I don't konw why, but this is one of the things people like to monkey with on these cars. I have had to fix this issue before. The bently manual gives all the information you need. If you don't have the manual, I could probably post the information here for you.

i've never needed to lift the lever to get into reverse, even before i totally F'ed up the reverse lock :confused:

The "peg" on the bottom of the rod is likely not extended long enough for it to catch the "lock" even if you don't pull up the collar. Or maybe It's been broken off. Take out the lever and take a peek. If it's still there, you can unscrew the peg on the bottom to elongate it. You have to remove the large cotter-pin mid-shaft to turn the peg on the bottom.

Its probably what RM '92 SPG said. But mine was different i can shift into reverse also without lifting the collar but it is because there is a plastic piece that is worn under the shifter in the housing. I may be able to extend the rod even farther which ill try first if that doesnt work i may have to add some jbweld or something to fix the wornout part.

Having the reverse lock makes it much easier to find 5th gear.

Pull up the rubber boot round the base of the shifter, remove the 3 screws underneath, and put it in neutral to pull the assembly straight out. You can take a look at the stud sticking out the bottom of the shifter, should be 22mm or 55/64in long.

If it's broken, you could hit up a scrap yard for a new shift lever, they'll charge around 5-10 dollars. The older (maybe pre-88) 900s have a straight through metal shaft around a plastic pivot, the newer ones are a rather shoddy tack welded shaft on a metal pivot. I prefer the older one since the weld tends to break, but the plastic part can also break... maybe I have heavy hands, but I've been through like 4 shift levers in 4 years.

i am still baffled that he only just "noticed" the collar.... even if the lift/reverse function is broken and it slips straight into 5th :eek:

Ahhh......you guys are too good. First, I've only had this little beast for two months. And YES....finding fifth gear took practice........

Once in awhile, finding reverse or putting it into reverse required double clutching or it would go in with a clunk.........

I'm not sure how much I want to tear into it and "make it right". I now lift the knob for reverse, and I've pretty much got fifth gear down.....none of this "grind 'em and find 'em" type of stuff that I had at first........

some good habits to get yourself into when selecting reverse...

making sure the car is stationary (none of this, rolling forwards and lots of clutch slip!)
take your time between gears (lets the synchros settle down)
when stationary, select 2nd gear, then reverse.... again, lets the synchros settle down and will avoid that nasty crunch) every time it crunches in reverse, you loose another bit of the teeth on the reverse gear :eek: :nono;
