I just bought an 89 900s. I have 3 main problems with it. 1: It won't shift from 1st to 2nd (automatic). The tach doesn't work (cable or electric?) It appears to have a leak in the power steering system. I have tried to get manuals for it, but none of the local auto parts stores have them. I have ordered it online, but don't know yet if they ecen have it in stock. I'm trying to get this car running again. Engine runs great after I corrected some vacuum leaks. help!

purchase of 900

No, this car was bought locally. The body and interior are in very good condition, even has some of the original tool kit tools. I actually test drove it and everything appeared to operate ok. I have the feeling that the transmission problem is something simple like a modulator or whatever the saab equivelent is. I can fix almost anything if I have a manual. (by the way, I purchased the car for far less than the listed kelly blue book trade-in value.

ServiceManual and Automatic Transmission

Amazon.com sold me the $56Bently manual for $7.00. It was on sale for $37 and the Amazon .com Discover card I opened for the purchase gave an additional $30 discount. No tax or shipping. Bently is the only manual to get. Forget Haynes.
If you get 100,000 miles out of a TB37 you are lucky.
A good transmission shop might be able to do a "soft repair" which means not a full blown $1,500 dollar rebuild (that price is if you take the transmission out of the car and drop it off).
Have just been through this and opted to install 5speed manual. Its a lot of work but worth it. Local shop has had bad luck with local rebuilds and even some remans.
The good part is I bought both the 1999 900s 16v and the donor car for $50 each.

Recently, several of my cars have had dead tachometers on start up. Only one was a Saab 900.

Anyway go ahead and smack the dashboard. In all three cars the tach bounced right up, it's probably just a screwy contact on the rear of the cluster.

The 1-2 shift problem is likely a brake band adjustment. About 1 hour's work under the car and well within your competence. Do the auto trans service as linked from: http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34597 and take note of ProfZ's amendments to the original.

You'll need:

1. 8-litres of ATF
2. A tube of flexible gasket sealer
3. A suitable spacer for the brake band adjustment
4. A torque wrench for bolting up the pans later.

Note, the brake band adjuster is under the rear pan...

Enjoy!...

apprectiation of tech info

I greatly appreciate the tech info. I will start working on the transmission as soon as this hurricane ophelia gets out of the way. I wanted to work on it today, but I know as do the rest of you that no mechanical work ever happens on old cars without something going wrong and a lot of wailing & nashing of teeth. I don't want to pull that pan out unless I can put it back in the same day.
