Hi
I have recently uprated my ECU to 190bhp, the dump valve has been uprated to a forge one. I have also upgraded all silicone vaccum pipes.
The car has covered 156,000 miles.
After 3000rpm on full throttle the car makes a whining noise, I would describe it similar to a police cars siren in the distance.
Is this the turbo on its way out?;oops:

I'm note entirely certain what sound you are describing, but it sounds as if its just the turbo spooling up.

The more you uprate your car, the more th eturbo spooling sound will be noticeable..

Hmmm, turbo's tend to whistle not whine and you generally hear them spool up earlier than 3krpm especially the lpt versions. Have you had the pulleys changed at any point? They get quite noisy at high mileages. Is the sound just at 3k rpm or does it get louder with more revs/speed?

The noise gets louder the higher the revs get. It only started doing it last week. To my knowledge the pulleys havnt been changed. Are they connected to the turbo?
There is a new turbo on e bay at the mo, best keep my eye on that!

Sludging can cause a whine from the oil strainer

So lets check the basics, is the oil fresh and fully synthetic, is the PCV system in good order?

Turbos usually emit smoke rather than sound loud, however if the car is in good condition maybe the upgrade is making the car & turbo work harder so its louder

The oil has not been changed for about 8 months, it is not fully synthetic, I have booked it in later this month for the service. I dont fully understand the PCV system, I have replaced the crankcase sensor, come to think the noise started about the same time as that was fitted? The PCV hoses have all been changed.

Sounds just like the turbo spool to me :cheesy: Especially if its starting at about 3k revs.. My son always says to me that it sounds like a police car in the distance..

Oil is the life blood of the engine and the extremely high forces within the turbo.

Go to fully synthetic and I would do an oil flush too, Forte do a great product foir this ;)

8 months on semi-syn?! I change my fully syn every 3/3. Chris' doomsday diagnosis is starting to seem somewhat likely. I doubt it's the turbo but the pulley is another good idea. When mine went on my last 9-5 it sounded like it was chirping more than whining.

There is no smoke!

If it is the spool up, do I have to worry about anything?
Nope, but do get that oil changed soon :p

Take your car to your mechanic and have the oil pressure tested!

Have him check for sludge. If there is sludge, go straight for the oil strainer because if it closes completely your engine will die from oil starvation.

May the force be with you.

Oh yeah almost forgot...you should switch to fully synthetic oil and make more frequent changes. These cars have some design flaws that can be overcome with a little more attention.
