I’ve got a 2006 Saab 9-5 that I’ve deemed to be a project car. It sat for a few years, and has developed multiple problems. I’m to the point that I have no more check engine lights. Phew… knock on wood, however one issue I’m trying to figure out, and I’m hoping someone could shed some light, is one day I was driving, floored it, five minutes later a check engine light came on, pulled over, the back of the engine, by the manifold, was smoking a bit. I noticed a hose disconnected which goes from the manifold to the turbo bypass control valve, which is also goes down off the tee splitter. I actually just replaced all the vacuum lines, but ever since that happened, when the engine gets hot, I hear a hissing sound, and occasionally, the car over heats, but only to the line above half. The car is also extremely sluggish after it is ran for 30 minutes or so. It could be two separate issues. Which I believe one to be a sticky thermostat, but the hissing… all lines are new and good… I’m leaning towards the intake manifold gasket since it was smoking from that area, but I’m not familiar with turbo systems either…

I assume that means the needle goes up to the bottom of the red segment? For general info for future readers, the gauge is ECU driven and stays at the 9 o'clock position from 82 to 122˚C IIRC. Designed to accommodate normal operating variations without worrying the driver. If it goes north of 9 o'clock this is deemed a problem.

Wiser minds will no doubt chip in, but the t'stat is a cheap and easy fix as a first step. Get a proper one. Like the DIC and CPS, its in the "buy cheap, buy twice" category.
