I have an 04 9-3 linear and my battery needed to be replaced, so i just went and bought the battery after replacing i was able to start the car and a couple of hours after i put in the key and the car wont start and i had "immobilizer failure" message on the sid. More importantly i can not even take the key out of the car now.

Has anyone else got this problem and maybe has a solution.

This is a longshot, but disconnect the neg side of the Battery for about 10 minutes and see if it goes away when you reconnect. If your still under warranty, the people that answer the phone for Saab Road Service are pretty good at coming up with little tricks to beat this sort of thig.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have tried to disconect the battery for the entire night as it just happend yesterday and no luck, unfortunatlly my warrenty has expired.

Well it is solved now. I went to the dealer and asked what it could be, they said for sure it is the scl (stearing column lock) and it would be around $400 with towing to do it. I had noyhing to do but agree with them to do it. The night before the car had to be towed to the dealer i did the following: i pressed the unlock button on the remote for about 40 sec while it was in the ignition and the key went from off to lock and i was able to get it out and then start the car with no problem. The message "Immobilizer Faillure" from the SID has gone too. Now go figure how to trust those dealers.

I'm not sure if this was actually a solution or if I just waited long enough, but I held down the unlock button with my key in the ignition and it seemed to allow me to start the car.

I've heard that when the battery in the key goes dead there is an issue with the key signal strength/syncing with the immobilizer. I unfortunately let both of my key batteries go dead and had to replace batteries in both, but the immobilizer warning still showed up and it wouldn't allow me to start the car. I figured it was an issue with the system not being able to reset or sync with the key once I changed the batteries so I tried your trick and it seemed to work for now. I'll have to check tomorrow to see if the issue comes up again.

The batteries have nothing to do with starting the car.... there is a passive RF ID Chip (like a magnetic credit card stripe) on the circuit board which the Column Integration module (CIM) recognizes. The batteries are for the remote transmitter... Locks, Lights, Alarm and Trunk operation.

This procedure cured the immobilizer issue for me also; I held the key in the ignition, held the unlock button for one minute, removed the key and put it back in. Bada bing, car started fine.

If you Insert the Key and the CIM does not recognize it, you cannot turn the key, so the ignition will still be in the lock position.

change the battery in your key also and unhook the neg battery turminal just happen to me last week
The battery in the key has nothing to do with starting the car, it is for transmitter lock/unlock and trunk switch/halo light commands. an RFID circuit in the FOB is what allows the car systems to turn on and start.

I tried starting my car this morning (Saab 9-3 convertible), and the key wouldn't turn. Then it would, but gave me the "Immobilizer failure" message. I tried what was suggested in this thread (holding the unlock button on the key while it's in the ignition) a few times, and got the following errors: antilock brake malfunction, and airbag malfunction.

Do I have any hope of starting the car without getting it to a garage?

Welcome to SC..

check the voltage of the car battery,all sorts of error mesages appear when the battery is in a low state of charge..

the only thing in the remote that has anything to do with starting or getting the car to start is the passive rfid chip,nothing else..

Thanks for the welcome! Not sure about the voltage, we're going to ask to borrow a multimeter from a mate this afternoon. If it's low, we'll try getting a new battery. I've had the car for two and a bit years (it's 7 years old) and have never changed it (unless it was done at the first service and I just don't remember).

If I do put a new battery in, is there anything I need to be aware of? My previous car was a fiesta, and when I replaced the battery in that, the stereo stopped working.

So key-wise, as long as it can turn (it can't always, because of the immobilizer error), that's definitely not an issue?
