I have a '89 9000 2.0 auto with 152k miles on it. When you get above about 20mph you get a loud humming noise inside the car. The noise does not change with speed. I can not tell wether it is coming from the back or the front. I thought it could be a wheel bearing. I have jacked the car up and tried twisting the wheels vertically, but I can not feel any play in the wheel bearings/hubs. Has anyone had a similar problem and how can I tell which wheel bearing has gone if it has gone. The noise is not dependent on un-weighting in corners either. My other thought is it could be a gearbox problem.

Anyone any ideas????

Tire noise? I had a very weird humming/buzzing noise that turned out to be a crack in a vacuum hose. If it isn't speed variable it likely isn't wheels or drivetrain. Wheel bearings tend to squeal or howl.

I am certain it is not tire noise. It sounds similar to a propeller hum. It is pretty loud. I am tempted to change the whell bearing one by one and keep my fingers crossed.
