With the clutch pedal pushed in, move the shifter to the top of the reverse slot but don't pull it into reverse yet. Very slowly release the clutch while gently pulling the shifter into reverse. At some point the stick will go into reverse, then, put the clutch back in so you don't stall it:)

My technique frequently lets me down, but that's another matter entirely....

Indeed. On classic models, even with the best will in the world, some things are beyond repair.
