While doing the breaks, I had the rear wheel off and had the car running to charge the break lines. While I was at the passenger side rear (US) I noticed a hissing noise coming from the area of the gas tank. I crawled under the car but couldn't tell where it was coming from. It seemed to be from on top of the tank.

Does anyone know what this is or could be? It sounded like a vacuum leak but I didn't think there were any vacuum lines back there.....

That's where the fuel pump is. Both of them, actually. There's a little 'pre pump' that fills the resrvoir that surronds the main pump, and the main pump itself.

If you've not noticed the noise inside the car, it's likely OK.

The vacuum reservoir is in the boot on the 'vert. Have a look under the spare wheel. A hose loose or cracked or the reservoir is damaged.

Cdaly comes up with the best info....

Easy test: if the hissing keeps going for a few seconds or minutes after the car is off, it's a vacuum leak. If it starts when you turn the car on, the noise is the pump(s)....
