Hey I'm new to this forum. I own a 1998 Saab 9-5 2.0 I4 (non turbo) with 160,218 Miles on the odometer. It is right hand drive (as I am in the UK) and burgundy red. I love how Saabs are so well built and will last forever without breaking down! I just changed the spark plugs in mine this morning and its now running better than it ever did. Anyone else own a '98 9-5 ? Well, thats about it. See ya! :cheesy:

Hi and welcome to saabcentral.

Btw all 9-5 are turbo aspirated engine. It is either the LPT (Low Pressure Turbo) or HOT High Output Turbo) found on the Aero.

Also check the forum FAQs on spark plugs and ensure that they are only the specified NGK.

Enjoy your saab. :)

Well I hope you're not too disappointed hope somebody didn't misrepresent the car. BTW Turbochargers actually make an engine much more efficient. You'll only burn more fuel if you drive like your hair is on fire.

Actually I usally do drive like my hairs on fire . Only when I'm running late though!... Well thats almost every day! I suppose it isn't that bad but I would have rather had no turbo. The person only listed it as 2.0 and didn't care to mention it had a turbo!

I suppose you could always take it off.. is there a forum for detuning? ;)

I went to look at a '99 9-5 for sale near me back in the fall. The lady swore up and down it was an Aero when it was actually a Linear LPT... it was even listed as an Aero on the document from the (large) local dealer! :suprised; I didn't know much about Saabs at that point, but I knew a 9-5 Aero should be faster than my '95 Mercury Mystique.

The sad part is that she'd paid ten large for it three years previously, and thought she could get $5500 for it because it was an Aero and because she'd just paid $1500 for a new turbo. Too bad it was beat up inside and out and book barely broke 3 grand...

Soon you'll learn to love the turbo. It's a quick little peppy car with a lot to offer!

Not really. I'm not a fan of turbo's. I only like turbo's on diesels. I think their useless in petrols. Just use more fuel. Sorry, but thats how I feel.
While Turbos are often more "necessary" on diesels to make them less sluggish, they are certainly not useless on gasoline engines... From what I've seen, the Saabs are among the more fuel efficient cars in their size/weight/performance range - and they all have turbos. Of course, if you drive with your foot to the floor, you will burn more fuel, but that's true for any car (turbo or not).

Probably didn't see the need to mention it as there are no "non-turbo" models available. If you like to drive like your "hairs on fire", you likely wouldn't be happy with a 2.0 in a car of this size if it didn't have a turbo - and a larger "non-turbo" engine would burn more fuel when you're just cruising than the turbo engine you have now.

Also I have a 1991 Ford Scorpio 2.0 I4 AUTOMATIC! and it's faster than the Saab and it's just a plain 2.0. See why I think the turbo's useless now ?
The turbo on your 9-5 is a light pressure turbo. You will barely notice it's there, but you would be surprised at what it's actually doing for your car's efficiency. It provides just enough boost to give the engine a lot of torque at low RPM. Of course once you rev the engine higher the engine's own vacuum will for the most part overpower the boost. If you took that turbo off you'd be revving the engine really high to get the car to move anywhere. The LPT just makes the car more enjoyable to drive by allowing the engine to provide sufficient torque at low RPM. It's a luxury car, not a race car. If you wanted a race car you should have gotten a 9-5 with a more prominent turbo. My 9-5 Aero can blow the doors off most other cars on the road.

Sounds like a fine opportunity to put a boost gauge on there and see if you're getting any boost at all. I have a 185hp 2.3LPT AT and it's quick off the line with the tiny turbo. Also check the wastegate control rod and make sure it's not just hanging loose (also known as "neutered mode").

The 1998 2.0t he's talking about has 148hp and 180ft-lb. It comes off the production line neutered.
