Okay guys, i know i post alota stupid things but i need help.

There was a noise like a rock hitting the underside of the car.

it lost power about 5 mins later, and when it got home it stalled as soon as it was put it in park.

The car lost ALOT of oil!

When the tow-truck came i had a chance to look under and on the oil pan was a hole the same size as a BIC pen.

Thrown rod???
this don't seem right to me....

OK, more info -
Never checked for sludge
Was not being driven hard
Oil level on the dipstick was alittle above the Min mark
No lights / SID message
Tried starting the car after my girl brought it home and all it did was a
"Graa-click-WHINE" noise
She limped home about 5 miles after the original noise happend
There is oil EVERYWHERE in front of my apartment building

I don't want to lose my SAAB

The engine probably stalled when it overheated, as a result of loosing oil, but it must have started with something other than a thrown rod, it does not take five minutes to notice that

I believe a rock hit the underside of the car, specifically the oil pan.

A connecting rod will give you some warning with its ominous noise(knock-knock).
And then there is the final bang as the rod is thrown thru the side of the engine...Ah...youth...bought her for $28, sold it for $35..hole and all..

it looks like a molten BB got shot through it at xxx,xxx MPH!

That is what is odd...i don't see how it took so long for the oil to drain out and lose power.

Also i have never seen the rod go through the oil pan.
all the ones i have seen got shot through the block...right?

This could be good news:cheesy: In the grand scheme of things.

BTW, if you have collision on your insurance, most states would cover it minus you collision deductible if you run over a foreign object.

My sympathies my friend. I really feel bad for you You're sure the engine is fried? Usually they start knocking before dying. Though I'm not an expert on losing oil while running the car. Actually that's not true, it happened on my MR2 but the car lost almost no oil before I shut it down so no damage was done. Most of the oil was still in there and continued leaking on the street. There was about a gallon under the car by the time the tow truck came to pick it up. I dodged a bullet on that one.

Hkayssi - She made no noises. just the idler pulley i was gonna replace within the month...

I am not shure on the engine as i don't have the space or the tools here to look her over. i sent her to a shop and they said they would get back to me in the morning.

Funny...i was thinking of telling my girl what to do if the oil light ever came on...
(not that it did while all this was going on)

How did you manage to shut the MR2 down so quick?

That's not good to hear. You can always get another SAAB and kep her for parts

It was pure luck with the MR2. I was using the car and parked it down town when I noticed the oil leaking. It must have started like seconds before as the engine was clean and the car's body too. Most of the oil leaked on the ground. It was pure luck that saved it :lol:

Trollhatten, this was from the '40 Chevrolet story - I knew ,even at 17 , that she was soon to "throw a rod".
The engine was shot anyway, no pressure lubrication back then. In retrospect, I should have tried to install a good used engine rather than making a $7 profit..

You should do the same with the Saab - but a good used engine of course...or a rebuild.

It will be interesting to know exactly what did happen with yours ....

The ECU is easy. Under a plastic trim panel below the glove box on the right side.

The best is to buy a used engine, or sell the car to someone who has an engine already. They are cheap enough on car-part.com. Wheels and tires can always be sold, so can bumpers. It all depends on how much time and effort you can put into stripping a car.

From the engine, DIC module, BPC valve, Evap purge valve, turbo BPV, MPA sensor at a minimum. Relays from the relay box (especially the orange relay), or just cut the wires and take the whole box. Electric radiator fan.

Headlights, corner lights, tail lights, headlight wipers and motors.

Cabin temp sensor, dimmer rheostat, and any backlit bottons you can get at, leather shifter boot.

A little more difficult, Instrument cluster, front seats or at least the leather seat covers, cabin fan, side mirrors, ICE module, electric seat controls, Electronic part of the ABS.

Yea and add to the parts list the spoiler if you have one, the Grille, radiator (I know of someone looking for one) water pump, power steering pump (I may need 1 ) your dash panel if it's wood, ACC unit, SID, radio, mirrors, shifter linkage...etc. You can probably get more for her in parts than when it was running a few days ago. I'll buy your rear panel on the tail gate (how much for that?)

Well i was wrong...
somehow it didn't throw a rod!
the shop told me that a stone kicked up and hit the pan in just the right spot at a high speed

They patched the hole and put oil in it...IT RUNS!!!!
i have to be the luckiest person alive!!!!
it is so nice to drive her again even though she could give-out at any moment

They did this outa curiosity too...i called them last night and told them not to run a diagnostic.

This made me realise - i cannot keep up with this car where i am.
when i was living back home it was different, i had a garage, money and tools.

Sadly i must let her go anyway.
my girl wants a Mercury Sable over a C900 that i found

I am not one to kill a car or just leave it but i have no choice with this...

Hkayssi - I will see what i can do about the parts...all i have taken off so far is the CD changer.

Oh, and a "PFS Armrest" is a $70 armrest from partsforsaabs :lol:

You can usually get more for a car in running condition, but whatever... Headlights and the other clusters usually go for $40-60 each, and you have six of them. I paid around $200 for 4 rims in good condition, more if someone wants the tires. Hard to say about the electronics, the prices asked are all over the map, but ebay is a good guide.

If the engine did not seize up, why not flush the overheated oil a couple times and just drive it? Can't be much worse than when i finally had a look at my engine, and that was 50K miles ago...

In the condition that the car is in i will get no interested buyers.

The body is shot - rust on the hood / rear hatch and a snowplow hit the rear QP a week after i bought the car :evil:

Transmission seals are leaking (i think)

Engine -
Oil pan obviously shot
idle pulley ticking
never checked for sludge

And then there is still the interior...
like i said i hate to see her go that way but i can't keep her and i would rather do that then end up junking her for $200

Well that depends on how much you expect to get for the car. Selling it whole versus parting it out. You need to decide what you want to do.

And I figured that's what you meant for the arm rest. How much for that? :cheesy:
It's $57 brand new from the US why buy it from the UK? :nono;
