When I'm driving with the top up the heater comes on fine and it stays on the temperature degrees settings on the screen. When I put the top down the temperature settings changed to a 1 to 10 scale and the heater never seems to work with the top it just blows outside air. I only have ever had the heater work with the top down one time out of probably 20. Why is this happening,

so your saying that there is no way to have heat with the top down
You should get heat when it is set to 10 and maybe some lower numbers. With the top down it basically switches the system into a pseudo manual mode as there is no way for the system to actually control the cabin temperature accurately.

No, if you push the red up arrow til it stops changing the number, the heat is on high. It will blow out hot air, usually by your feet. With the wind deflector in the back, it was a pleasant drive, even though it was only 40 degrees outside.

That's the problem I'm having however, when it's on 10 there is no heat except for the one time as I mentioned

has your cooling system ever been flushed....the valves on the cabin matrix may only be working partially.
When I had my Aero 06' Conv the heating with the roof down wasn't too bad but would have boiled me with the roof up.
Your motor should be getting ready for their 4th coolant fill....missing them isn't good as the stuff degrades and starts eating at the engine rather than protecting it.

Same problem I used to have with my '04. Here's the fix to get nice warm heat. Don't ask me why this works, but it does. When the top is down and u have the # set to 10, push the button with the arrow that directs the air out of the vents. When I have the top down, I prefer to have the warm air blow on my body instead of at my feet. Once u have everything set like that if hot air doesn't come out do this: TURN THE CAR OFF FOR LIKE 5-10 SECONDS, THEN START THE CAR AGAIN. All the sudden warm air comes out. I don't know why that fixes it, but it worked every time for me.

Mine is odd.....in single zone mode (where I adjust my side and the passenger side at the same time) only with the top down, there is only hot air from the drivers side vents. If I reach over and lower the passenger side down to ) and then raise it back to 10, the hot air starts. This doesn't happen with the top up...the passenger side adjusts on its own and when controlled from the drivers side as it should. Never could figure out whats wrong....
