Hi, for the life of me I cannot settle as how exactly this valve should be installed since my take on the cooling system and the schematic in Bentley's [page 261-2] is at odds with cdalys' diagram of the flow~valve setup in his very helpful post at this link:

{for my errors etc I am re-installing the Heater By pass Valve as part of the coolant "overhaul" brought about by blown radiator.}

this is my version…also I take it that, as with the radiator, the upper connection on firewall to heater is the Hot feed in.

ps there are no guide markings on the valve itself,

Your pic looks right except it should be turned over the other way. The hot-in should point at the cylinder head, the cold out should point at the front of the car and the two parallel ends should point at the heater valve. Have you the original hoses in place? If so, they should lie such that it becomes obvious.

I'm not sure which is the hot in to the valve but I think you're correct saying it's the top one.
