Hi everyone, recently my car started pouring white smoke out the exhaust, sure enough there is coolant in my oil. I plan to replace the head gasket but was wandering what other easy or important fixes I should look into while I have the engine apart. Everything else is in correct function but I've heard it may be smart to replace the timing belt, stuff like that.

My car has 148,000 on the body and 120,000 on the motor.

Any helpful advise would be appreciated.

Do you mean serpentine drive belt, these cars have timing/balance chains.

If the timing/balance chains are noisy this would be a good time to do it.
It is also a good time to check the idler bearings in the serpentine belt system.
When these seize the belt can be shredded and leave you stranded, I know this!

Check the end play on the turbo, if it has play get it checked over.

Timing/balance chains and turbo are not cheap, again ask me how I know!!

But if they are going out it is a good time to do them, my car sounds great and goes great now.

Thermostat, replace it unless it was recently done.

Have fun

And since you have the cylinder head off anyway, it's the best time to have the head checked to see if it is warped. If the head is warped, you would be doing the head gasket again really soon.

If the warp isn't to bad, the head can be planned down to true flat again.

It would also be a good time to check the valves and valve stem seals as well.
