Is there a way to tell if (removed) harmonic balancer is bad?

I have a known good pulley but without mounting holes for CPS disc… No way to find new one here - so I wonder if I can use one removed from car. Reason for removal was squeaky cold starts and lot of oil/grease in crank pulley area. Belts are heavily glazed so I hope that it was oil leak problem. A/C compressor is throwing some gunk around - there is a blac trail on bonnet…

Visual inspection would give an idea without really being conclusive. You are looking to see how intact the rubber bonding between the 2 Halves is , if its looking taddy , balling up , torn then fair chance its no good,

I guess you could lock the centre in a vice and grip the outer with vice grips or the like and see if the outer can move .. Crude I know but only thing that comes to mind.

The test in situ is to mark a line between the 2 halves ( chalk or the like ) if the removal was based on squeaks the balancer may not have been to blame , when they do separate the noise is more constant and probaly louder than what you had .
