Help,
My 5speed is having a grinding time getting into 2nd gear. I can shift, but I hear a horrible noise. Same problem downshifting into 2nd. SOmetimes I hear no noise, sometimes I get resistance to the change and a grinding noise. I am only experincing this when shifting into 2nd. Every other gear shifts very smooth. Any advice would be appreciated.

sounds like your 2nd gear is shot.......

But a mate at work had the same thing about 1 month ago on his 1990 T16S & that turned out to be only a Clutch which the local Saab Main Dealer replaced
for very little ££££
plus he gets a 2 year warranty on parts & labour

Sounds like the synchros. Before spending any real big money, you might prolong by switching to Honda MTF. A lot of guys here have had rather dramatic results with just that.

I've had the same problem, and have been double-declutching when changing into 2nd for the last two years which stops it grinding. It's not worth getting a gearbox rebuild just because of the 2nd gear synchro, but if the box fails you could get it done at the same time.

I think the DDC is the perfect answer for our cars. Couldn't one make a stronger tranny by re-engineering without the synchros all together? I always do it too. Well not right now as my ride is an auto. But shortly I will be in the land of standard. My GF is going to drive the new car as well and I have been explaining how to drive standard to her and only explaining DDC. She was practising on the Neufield at the farm and doing alright!

Jorgen Ericsson sells such a gearbox for the 900. It's a 4-speed box without any synchro rings, and thus wider gears.

A non-synchromesh gearbox would be a nightmare on a daily driver.

Is this Honda MTF really that good?

My local honda dealer is a nice guy and am sure i could get some for free:lol: , my brother has an older shaped Honda Accord and every time i pick my brother up from the Honda dealer he comes out to look at the 900 with a teary eye, his father worked on them when he was a boy and would take him out at lunch time and he loved the woosh! :D

Whats makes this MTF help the tranny on the 900?

I read that if a oil is to slick it runs the feel of the shift?

This is all new to me:confused:

Part of the difference comes from replacing Saab's original fill of engine mineral oil with proper gearbox oil. The rest of course is because after fifteen years the original oil will be well and truly knackered!

Where can I get this oil from and how much oil will my 5 speed gearbox take?
You can buy the Honda MTF from any Partco store as a Unipart product, code GUL2622 and sold in 2.5 litre cans. £15+VAT/each IIRC. Lubricant capacity on the 5-speed transmission is 3.0L.

Good old cut and paste!

RE: Strengthening

I read somewhere - poss. Classic & Sports car - about a brace you could buy for E-Type Jags, as they too suffered from twisting gearbox casings. However, I suspect jag 'boxes where made of steel, and this thing could be easily welded on and bolted to the sub-frame. Perhaps something similar could be engineered for our, wonderful cars - those that work anyway...

Engine out.
Rebuild starts... sometime.
It's a summer / autumn project.
Or so I keep telling myself between going to work and eating biscuits.
