i ended up getting the sumitomo htrz II for $81 a piece from tirerack. it has an awesome tread pattern that radiates outward from the center of the tread. unfortunately, i'm not happy with them at all. i guess coming from the pirillis, any tire is going to feel soft, but the sidewalls seem much too soft for my taste...so much so that i feel like the whole handling dynamics of my car have deteriorated. the pirillis were very stiff and loud, but they inspired much more confidence when pushed hard. it was very easy to drive my car at the limits because i knew exactly when the front tires were about to lose traction. now i have to deal with these tires for the next 30k miles.

Try inflating them to a higher psi. I prefer the ride of the Pirellis with at least 40psi at each corner, usually closer to 42psi. This is the rating for towing/load carrying so it's safe for the car and the max tire pressure is much higher. I think the 'regular' inflation for the Pirellis is around 38psi. 4 or 5 pounds makes a big difference.

I agree. With my Michelin's, they feel downright sloppy when they are around 35-36 psi. I prefer to keep them around 39-40 psi. It really tightens everything up and makes the car actually feel more solid. I've kept them there for about 6,000 miles and treadwear seems to remain even as well.

I have my pirelli's at 40psi all the way around but my car felt really odd driving. Yes I noticed very good straight away speed but at high speed doing lane changes, the car wasn't as nimble at it was under inflated. Any ideas as to what I can do to alleviate this, lessen it to 38 or 36psi???

Try different combinations of high and low psi, front to rear. My car feels more nimble at higher inflation pressures, presumably because there is less sidewall flex when the vehicle moves left or right. I generally try to keep the pressures about 1-2 psi lower in the back, just because I've always seen recommended tire pressures with lower numbers for the rear.

i'm just afraid of wearing the center of the tires...i ran about 38 psi on the pirillis and wore them in the center a decent amount. then the dealer tech upped the tire pressures after i told him not to, then noticed it wore the centers a rediculous amount. i'm now running 36 psi and the car "wobbles" way too much. even letting off the gas makes the car wobble in a turn. the suspension feels much softer because of this. this sucks because i feel like i can't have as much fun with it anymore. i'll try raising the pressures, but i doubt that's going to help much in terms of handling and will only wear the centers.

I'm about to buy a pair of new tires as well and am wondering what else people have gotten?

I've read about the Continental SportContact, Falken's (forget which model), Yokohama (again forgot which model).

Anybody bought the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport's?

I like the Pirelli's (P-Zero Nero M+S) but courious about other tires and how they are? I guess its pass on the the sumitomo htrz II (Cojoroh)?

I just bought a set of Yokahama AVS Es-100 yesterday for my 93 Aero, good corner handling tires on dry road (do not have a chance to test on wet road yet), I don't like the road noise.

Try upping the pressure. If it works, you'll have to live with ill-handling tires that much less.

Anyone heard of Federal Tyres. They have this nice looking high performance tyre. Thread wear rating of 240. Seems that the Australians love them for its good all round performance. Thinking of trying them and they are really value for money too.

Dont forget to try and balance tires as well. That could always be a culprit too. Pirelli's are too damn fussy. Its funny, I drove past a Mercedes CLS 500 and saw Pirelli's on it. Just made me wonder if a benz uses it as stock then why change from it...

I put a couple hundred miles on new BFG g-Force KDWs and aside from the increased tread noise, they were incredibly grippy. Wet traction is excellent, even better than the Yokohamas A550s (and much better than the Dunlop 9000 Sports)

I had always run my tires at the highest recommended pressure in the past but when I ran the Pirelli's at 40PSI for only a few thousand miles I too noticed a lot of center tread wear. Backed off to 36PSI and rotated tires but now they too feel "soft". Bottom line is I have never liked Pirelli's going back over 30 years.

I will find a better summer tire next time ( which will be soon, too soon!)

Highly recommend Goodyear Ultragrip GW3 for snow tires. Searching for summer tire with good wet handling.

The Yokohama AVS ES100's are a noisy tyre due to the tread pattern. I had a set of them on my previous car and I was lucky to get 35,000km out of them. As a comparison, the previous tyres were Dunlop SP200E's and they lasted 50,000km before hitting the minimum tread depth indicators.

I would also suggest rotating the ES100's regularly, as they will wear the edges rather quickly, even when inflated 4PSI higher than recommended.

I'd be interested to hear how you feel they compare to the Pirelli's, assuming they were fitted to your Aero from the factory. I looked at the ES100's but i didn't think they had the correct load rating for our cars.

On the topic of tyre pressures, how many people are measuring the pressure when the tyres are cold (20degC)? I normally see a 3~4PSI increase with the front tyres normally 1PSI higher than the rears, after only a short drive.

My pops taught me to always check the car tyres, oil and other fluids cold, before you headed out on a drive. If he caught us checking a hot car he'd go off, not bad but on how in-accurate and off we'd be if we added air or some fluid. :D

Thanks for the info on the tires, getting very close in the front to needing new ones, still on the fence, mainly concerned with wear at the moment, Pirelli's are nice but wear rather quickly, I'm only at 15K miles! So far worn the original fronts (currently the original rears are on the front), replaced with Pirelli's but seriously considering other brands.

i find it easier and more accurate to measure just about everything cold, with the engine off...with the exception of automatic transmission fluid. i'm not sure if that tire balancing comment was directed towards me or not, but i can pretty much rule that out...i had a former co-worker mount and balance these new tires while i stood beside him the whole time...he even used the hub adapter which most shops don't even bother with. my steering wheel is as steady as can be even at 100 mph. in my opinion, just about any balancing issues will show up at this speed. i guess these tires just need some getting used to. i don't have nearly as much confidence in turns as i used to with the pirillis, but i have to admit, these tires grip much harder than i expected them to. it feels like the sidewall rolls over too much, but they still seem to grip pretty well. these tires are also very quiet, but most tires are when they are new. i really hope all of this is being caused by "tread squirm", but somehow i doubt it.

p.s. you know what...i don't know if it's because i got used to them or not, but i really like the pirillis now. yeah, they had a short lifespan, gave a rough ride, and they got pretty darn loud, but they felt good. for all the negatives those tires had, i thought those were the most predictable at the limit tires i've had. just a personal opinion.
