sorry, looks like i posted in the ss sectiong >.> i apologize, here is the right place for my hatchy.

Hi, recently i got a 99 saab 9-3 with 70k on it. I bought it for the mileage, it is one of the lowest mileage saab i found, but today when i was driving it the check engine light suddenly turn on and won't go off, what can it be? also sometimes during idle when on parking i can hear a small continouse gong gong gong sound while in the car, sound like its coming from the engine but when i pop the hood the sound is fine. what can it be?

please help me out, ur advise is much appreciated.

Couple of questions:

Is there a message on the SID (Saab Information Display)?

Are any other lights on when the CEL comes on?

Is there a big red exclamation point within a triangle ?

When the check engine light comes on, you should take it to an auto parts store that will loan you an OBD II code reader. That will tell you what the problem is, or at least give you a general idea. The reader can also reset the light.

On the SID it says service engine, other than that there is nothing but the CEL.
and also the gong gong gong sound...what can it be?

The CEL is very general - it indicates that one of the sensors is picking up an incorrect reading, and/or the sensor itself isn't working. The only way to tell which sensor is to get the codes pulled by a mechanic. Here in the US, there are a lot of chain stores that will do this for free.

Iro, is the "gong - gong" melodious ??

Similar to when the key is left in the car ?

This "free read" cannot continue - OBD II and III and IV readers are expensive and very expensive, and it take some skill to use them..
But, IMO, the dealers are wrong to charge $90 for a read out !!

I don't think it's as bad as that, Earthworm. I think I've seen OBD II readers for about $150.00 or so. Not pocket change, but I'd probably spring for one if I had an OBD II car and a pesky CEL.

Unfortunately my '94 is still OBD I. Those readers are expensive! Supposidly I can still use the blinking light method, although it seems like everybody on the board who has tried it couldn't get it to work.

Anyway, no problem for me, my cel is nicely off for now :)

no the gong gong gong is not melodious, is continouse and its like the vibration from the engine is hitting something like metal and metal hitting...i don't know..its like deg deg deg deg deg instead of gong gong...

That's not the SID gong. That's something probably more serious.

Get it checked, my friend.

?? Aren't they the muffler people ??

Are you saying that Midas would sell an OBD service for $75 ?? Ha !!

For $150, I think I would buy my own, if I knew who(m) to trust.....
I need one to read everything (the SRS light is still on)..

Back on topic..
Check the belt pulleys, but the noise - I do not know about..
Check the mounts and the exhaust and the heat shields..

Earthworm raises a good point OBDII readers are affordable when they are on sale, but will they diagnose the other warning lights? Or do you need the expensive and unbuyable tech II?

Mr Market does pose a good question with the need for the Tech II along with the OBD II reader.

I wish I knew more about this.....

Look right above your legs under the dash, on my 94 the connector is there. You might check out Munki's site under the "Tech Help" link above. There is a way to get the cel to blink out the code, but I'm not sure whether it works for obd II cars. So far, nobody seems to have gotten it to work, but it might be worth a try. Do you have an autozone nearby? They will usually check for free and save you the cost of a reader.

A sensor malfunction ?

Oxygen
temperature
MAF/MAP
throttle position
crankshaft position
oil pressure
is this all of them ?
I guess the first one is most likely
From what I have read, these are cleanable..
