Hi Guys,

I know this thread has been done before but can anyone please direct me to it.

I want to replace the Garret turbo on my 2001 185hp 93 with the TD04. I know this is just a bolt on, but please direct me to the thread, and any other comments will be greatly appreciated.

Regards...

Just 2 questions?

Is it necessary to change the intercooler?...and is it really necessary to change the turbo intake pipe to accomodate the TD04 from the GT 25?

Other than that, any other suggestions?

Much appreciated.

It's not necessary to change the intercooler, but adding a Viggen intercooler to a GT25 will give you more of a performance improvement than adding a TD04 without an upgraded ECU, so it's definitely worthwhile and should be done. You do have to change the inlet pipe. They mount to the turbos in completely different ways.

So when the TDO4 comes on, intake plus ECU is a must. The surely if I add the bigger intercooler, all in all it will be better?

What type of Piggyback can you recommend, seeing as I am from South Africa and there is not much SAAB expertise floating around here.

Would I be correct in the following steps:
1. Inlet
2. Turbo
3. Ecu
4. Intercooler...

Thanks for your replies guys, it is much appreciated...

There are no piggy back programers that work well with saabs, but there are cheap tunes available now;)

You can get a ets ic or a chinease one and fab up the ic piping yourself. The inlet pipe can also be made of a rubber elbow and some piping.

Check this site, many answers there!

PS, his car is now tuned by me and rips:cool:

Intake is debatable. Most say the stock intake (albeit modified) is suffecient for low-to-moderate power levels.
Sound is better with aftermarket though.

The stock T25, bigger I/C, nice DP with exhaust and a tuned ECU to Stage-3 will get you far enough into the power range of about 250.

Piggyback systems don't work with the Trionic systems of our cars.

In place of a tuned ECU, (and much cheaper) consider a MBC from smartperformance. Fuel cut-off is about 15psi and with a gauge you should be able to get the boost to hit 14.9.

Power won't be that of the Stage-3 ECU (19-20-ish psi) but is better for those on a budget.

John's tunes are excellent and his customer service is outstanding, always quick replies and free re-tunes if need be.
I have an T5 auto tuned for TD04 and it screams! Great job, John.

I haven't used John...yet but when I swap to a gt28 or 30 in the spring I have decided he will be who I call for a tune, He seems to have a great knowledge base and is always eager to lend a hand.

Thanks so far for everyones help...

At the risk of sounding stupid...tuned ECU to stage 3 how will I do that? Is that BSR PPC? or is it something a tuner will do?

another question with regards to intake pipe, will someone that does turbo installations be able to take my stock intake pipe for my GT25 and then be able to manufacture a high performance one, or is this one of those pieces that are truly specialised?

To your first question a tuner will give you a stage 3 tune for your ecu, you just send them your ecu and tell them what you have done to the car.

Second, a good performance shop worth their weight should be able to fab up an intake for you on either turbo, but be prepared they will prob charge by the hour and it could be pricy.

O.k. so now that I have established sort of a plan for the upgrades

1. Custom Intake
2. TD04 Turbo
3. Stage 3 ECU
4. Intercooler
5. Custom 3" Exhaust....

What power ranges and torgue could we be looking at???
