I recently bought a 900 t 16s 1989 very cheap (£400) as it jumps out of reverse. When I turn the heater direction control to the lower settings the letters EXH light up on the dash between the fuel and temp gauges. This is my fourth Saab and none of them had this, nor have any saab people I know ever seen it before. Is it maybe an imported car ? Any thoughts welcome (within reason!) thanks, still learning loads from this forum.

I cant help with the EXH light but that is going to be the least of your worries that popping out of reverse is seriously bad news on a 900t

Hi There,
The exh light is to do with cars fitted with oxygen sensors in the exhaust, don't think there is one fitted on '89 UK 900 so probably an earth fault or a "short"

To Wheelie, reverse gear problem I fixed easily, found a reverse gear fix on the Townsend site.It involved removing dipstick side cover on gearbox which allows you to remove and modify reverse gear linkage.Took about one hour and has worked fine so far. I bought the car expecting to remove the engine and box to repair this. Also thanks to Steve for reply.

baldone, was there anything on that site about having a second gear that pops out every now and then? Can it be fixed like it is in your car (dipsticks?)without replacing the entire gearbox?

Thanx!

Doktorevil,
I did not see anything about second gear fix but take a look yourself at tech help on this site. Look at Townsend and also Jeff & Royces site under gearbox, clutch etc, hope this is of some help to you.

info from saabsite
There is a red button located just above and to the left of the clutch/brake pedal. It is located on the bracket that holds the black vent with a screw. All of the above components are located behind the drivers kick panel. Simply push the red button and the EXH light will go out. The EXH light on the classic 900 comes on every 30,000 miles to alert you that a Major Service is necessary.

hope useful
