Is there a place to purchase remanufactured engine and transmission units together as one package for pre 1993 900s? It just seems to me that if I do this at one time with a warranty on both units I would come out ahead instead of fixing things in the engine that will probably require removal, then having to do it again when the trans gives up. Any advise?

I am sure there is someone that will do that for you, but beware that a fully recon engine and gearbox, provided with a warranty will cost a huge amount of money - far more than your car is worth! If you want to go down that route, that's OK, but be prepared to fork out some serious cash!

I've looked into buying a fully, factory spec'd engine for my 900 T16. The lowest price I was quoted was £1000.

Best get a second hand engine & box from a low milage car and swap them over.

I'm pretty sure there's no shop out there that sells rebuilt engines/trans for the old 900; you'd have to get these items rebuilt separately by the appropriate specialists.

The engine wearing out should be the last of your worries--problems are usually with ancillaries (fuel pump, alternator, starter, etc.). Don't even bother looking for a replacement engine until you see some serious warning signs that it is dying.

If you have a dead engine now, you can replace it with a used one and it will do right by you for a long time.

As for the trans, if it's bad you should have it rebuilt (and upgraded where possible). These are the weak point of the 900, and junkyard replacements don't make sense.
