I've read that using an engine oil flush before an oil change is a good idea, DEPENDING on how many miles are on an engine.

Since I just bought a 900SE V6 with no access to it's history, I thought it might be a good idea to do this.

Does anyone know whether this is a good or bad idea for a car with 161,000 km?

When you do a search :) you'll see this has been pretty well debated. Some feel it's worth it to keep the engine clean as possible, while others fear the flush can do more harm than good if it dislodges larger particles which can then go on to clog vital oil passages.

Having bought my car with 100k (miles), I prefer to use a good synthetic and not worry about flushing.

Agree - no flush

Just use a good synthetic and drain the oil very warm to hot, every 3 to 4 months...

The V6 does rather well on a flush, every other oil change will suffice, also the V6 does not require premium synthetic, I've found a 5-40w semi synth has mine running its quietest; quiet = smooth and low wear.
