Hi, I own a 2000 saab 9-3 lpt convertible. The car broke down about 4 months ago where I lost total power and came to a hault. The AA informed me that it was most probably the coil pack, so on this advice I went out and brought a second hand one and fitted it myself. The car was fine for about 5 days then the engine management light came on one evening. I then took it to my local main dealer where I explained what had happened and they informed me that I was in for a new Cat. Not willing to pay there prices , I took it to a local chap who did the work at a fraction of the price, and I'd trust over the main agent. Everything was fine until the light came on again. I took it back on numerous occassions and it was coming up with an old fault code from previous (something to do with emissions) On this information he's since changed the Cat sensor that monitors this and has all so fitted a brand new coil pack! It was fine for about 200 miles then the light came back on. I took it back in and this time there was no fault code or reason why it was coming on? HELP!!!! because he and I are both baffled by this and we have not got a clue where to go now with this. Unfortunatly, I'm starting to regret the day I bought this car as it seems to spend more time in the garage then it does on the road.
Thanks for any reply!

After each time a component is replaced is the check engine light getting reset? I believe you can take it to a dealer/shop to have them do it, but it'll probably cost a few pounds (sorry my keyboard doesn't have the symbol  ) or you can simply disconnect the battery negative terminal for something like 3 to 4 hours to reset the ECU, and the CEL at the same time. And since you have a 9-3 you don't need to worry about radio security codes (though you will loose any preset stations).

But if the check engine light is being reset each time and keeps coming back on, can you be more specific on which codes keep coming up?

Hi, Thanks for your reply. The managment light is being re set and at one point the ECU memory was wiped altogether. I'm not sure on the code but the chap from the garage told me that the emmissions are over the tolerated level. He called a chap in that specialises in Saabs and they traced it back to cylinder no 2 miss firing, thus a brand new coil pack. The most recent occassion when it went back to the garage, there was no code at all, but the engine management light was on???? I have no idea. Could it be a chip of some discription? I recall seeing this on a forum a couple of months back.

Could possibly be that the original reason the CEL came on has been cured, and another problem - related to the replacement of the DI pack - has arisen. Check all vacuum pipes would be a decent start.

Thanks for your reply, I know this may sound pretty stupid but could you tell me what a CEL is? I honestly have no idea.
Thanks
