Finally, some decent pics of the bearings that came out of my '96 900SE turbo at 108k miles. With any luck, the end of a long story that started with finding oil deposits under the valve cover, continued with a clogged oil screen and worn chains, and now replacing all of the rod and main bearings.

Damaged and cracked rod bearing:

Unevenly worn but intact rod bearing:

Main bearing from same engine showing about normal wear:

PMI, were you not the man who tried the Auto-Rx to alleviate the engine oil sludge and carbon problem.

Was this able to do anything ?

I think the best thing to do is to pull the valve cover and examine the surfaces..- hopefully they are reasonably clean.
If not, prepare to pull the pan and even replace the screen if not cleanable using a rotary wire wheel or dynamite...

Yes, that was me. I first found the problem when the valve cover was removed to fix a couple small leaks and replace the valve cover gaskets. I only had time to run one ARX clean and rinse cycle, not two as recommended. I really could not drive another 3500 miles with the chains and bearings in that state. This is a summary of what was done:

Valve cover, cam-end plug and filler tube leaks fixed
Oil deposits found under valve cover, chain noise at idle
Used oil analysis comes back with high wear metal content
Amsoil Engine flush used with one oil change
Oil pressure, compression test OK, pics of top of engine

Valve cover cleaned to remove some of the deposits
Lubro-Moly valve cleaner used
Oil in intake, PCV valve replaced for 3rd time in 50k miles
Auto-Rx 1st clean/rinse started
Timing chain tensioner measured, found out of spec

Auto-Rx 1st cycle finished
Oilpan and oilscreen removed, cleaned, pics taken

Bearings inspected, rod bearing wear found
Rod and main bearings replaced, balance chain removed
Oilpan and screen cleaned again before reassembly

Pics of the old bearings were posted above in this thread. I will probably start another ARX cycle when the break-in period on the bearings is over, then pop the valve cover again.

Oh, and btw, before anyone asks about synth oil one more time, on the SN board there is a post from someone with a '00 9-3 on synthetic since day one. His engine description sounds like mine, 6 months ago.
