After replacing the fuel pump assembly and getting no start - I double checked the DIC and plugs visually. The plugs were wet, so I was clearly getting fuel, dried, checked gap & reinstalled carefully replacing the DIC.

Voila, got a quick start followed almost as quickly by falter/sputter and die. :-(
Restarted pretty easy - got a couple of minutes out of it and again falter/sputter and die. :-( :-(
Again restarted pretty easy - nursed it to stay up and running for ~5-7 minutes then let it run on its own. Stayed running with only a couple of minor hiccups. About 20 min later decided to take it for a spin - noticed fuel gage way too low - drove around, never stopping the car - got gas just to be sure - stopped by dealer for some free perspective/advice then home. Finally stopped the car. Restarted a couple of times with no issue.

Fast forward a couple of hours. Decided to take the car to pick up my daughter from work. Start was not pristine, car died 5 times before I could go 3 miles. Got it up to speed ~60 still stumbled and faltered a bit with some lurching involved. Then once fully heated up, IMO, all that leveled out. No issues all the way to get my daughter and back home.

I have searched the forum a good bit and see a fair number of posts regarding issues after heating up, but this one is the opposite. Could the CPS still be in play here? Something else? It is a bit crazy/elusive.

Any solid leads/help/advice/thread pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Did you replace the fuel filter at the same time? changing the pump can stir up all the sediment in the bottom of the tank. Also make sure the check valves weren't damaged.
Yep, fuel filter replaced - tho it's hard to imagine that causing a problem that would go away as the car heated up. Right?!
Same with valves, but how would one check that other than making sure of getting fuel? No indication of damage I can see.

Less fuel is required once the car is started and warmed up, so a partial fuel supply issue could be the problem.

Have you replaced the plugs and tried a different DIC, checked the vacuum lines, made sure the FPR is clean and free of debris.
I suppose. No issue at WOT though and apparently the primary symptoms have gone away (according to daughters driving the car - no current issues like that) - very odd.

BTW-FWIW - no plugs not replaced, don't have another DIC to try, no obvious vacuum line issue. No specific check of FPR yet.

Now - new issue? - Daughter just reports the check engine light has come on. No chance to get code pull - no clue what is driving it.

2003 convertible starts then stalls or dies

Car starts seems ok then chokes and dies or stay on if i give it some gas but wants to die out. Stays on after repeated attempts and then drives fine. If left overnight the issue will return. If started right after driving it start right up.
Fuel pressure about 40 psi on the rail

Have done recently:
Vacuum hoses
Fuel filter
Fuel pressure regulator
spark plugs
engine air filter/cleaned MAF
Fuel pump and check valves.

Totally stumped and no check engine light. Rather not take to the mechanic but that seems like my next step unless anyone has some suggestions.

Try starting from cold with an electrically boosted start from another vehicle... see if it keeps running then.

Sounds electrical to me, specifically, low battery capacity and system voltage too low after start to sustain the spark.

Thanks for the tip. Just tried it after letting it sit for 12 hours. I hooked up my 9-5 to the 9-3 vert and although it did choke a little it did not die out all the way and keep running without using the throttle. Seemed better. I'll have the battery checked and possibly replace. Didn't seem electrical at first to me but I've had enough Saabs to know I should suspect the battery first.

I'll repost after I check/replace the battery

Hey, I'll be passing through the area tomorrow afternoon/evening and have a DIC that you could pop in and see if that's the problem. PM me if you want to set something up.

It could potentially be the CPS but I doubt it if you see the tach lift a bit when you're cranking the motor. I'm kinda doubtful that it's the battery because these cars can be a bit more resilient to a bad battery than most people say. I had an Interstate one barely clinging to life and I drove on it for about 6 months that way without issue until I completely killed it dead.

Also, did you replace the pump assembly or just the insert? There's a bunch of little mesh filters on the assembly that should really be washed out when only replacing the insert.

Thanks. I have a couple spares myself that I can try. Don't know if they are any good but I'll give that shot and see if it changes anything. I have always gotten a code when the dic starts to go but I'll try anything simple at this point. I'll repost after trimming the battery and DIC.

Tried a spare DIC and it didn't change anything. Started up ok then died. Started again, stuttered like it usually does then idled fine.

is this a new issue or endemic to the vehicle? is it possible the timing chain could have been replaced and mistimed? cold engines are more susceptible to bad timing.

I doubt the timing chain was replaced but not 100% sure. Just kind of started happening recently Have only had the car for about 1000 miles. I might try another fuel filter for kicks.

Put new battery in and no change. Still starts seems ok for 3 seconds then dies. After it stays started, if I give it a little gas it will hesitate at first. After a minute or so I will even out.

I am going to try cleaning the throttle body next in hopes that improves the situation. Possibly wires going bad on TB?

What does the exhaust smell like? Is there soot in the tailpipe, or black smoke coming out? Sputtering and shaking can point to over-rich fuelling. Is the check engine light on?

Thanks for the reply. None of the above mention things are happening. That is why I am so stumped I have no evidence of anything else going wrong to point me in the right direction period will be taking off and inspecting and cleaning the throttle body today in hopes that shows some sort of improvement

Thanks for everyone's input and help. I tried all suggestions with no change. Took out and cleaned the throttle body tonight. Didn't seem too dirty and the flap moved easily but will see how it is after sitting overnight.

If no change its off to Just Saab here in Cincinnati. Best saab repair shop around. Used to be a dealer now the same guys repair them.
