Ok guys (and gals), i have searched this forum for a few hours now and cannot find the speaker depth of the door speakers in the 2004-9-3 aero. I found plenty of ohm ratings and speaker sizes...I want to put focal 6.5 drivers in the door..they are 2 7/8" deep..they are expensive, so I want to make sure they will fit!! Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

BTW, anybody compete with their saabs in soundoffs? I don't, but I did get my hands on an spl meter from a customer at work and gave it a workout. My single 12 did 132db playing various songs from my zune...pretty sure I could get and extra db or so with some dedicated freq tracks. My box is currently sealed, getting ready to port it so that should add a couple of dbs as well. I think once I get it to 137-138db range I'll be satisfied.

ok i just answered my own question. the stereo shop says their source says 3". thats tight for a 2.9" speaker. These things are $480 dollars a pair so you can bet if the door needs cut...it will be cut!!

Just the midbass drivers...

I would be hesitant to go deeper than stock due to window clearance. My ID CX62's causes a slight rub. The window still worked, but I believe the "rub" contributed to the eventual demise of my window regulator. I am a big fan of my Infinity kappa 62.7i's for this location. Great sound and nice low profile, so no worries.

Thank you very much!! This is the info i was looking for!!

The advertized depth on the Focal driver is 2.9 Inches...the thread said 2.8 for the ID's..and they rubbed...hmm...might hafta fabricate a lil spacer..and cut the door to accomidate it. No offense, but I'm just not an infinity guy...way back when I went with Polk mm over infinity kappa and have never used infinity...really i just don't like their product line.

In those threads lots of people said the door speaker is the best driver in the car...what?...its the same problem everybody else has..install a sub, play it loud..cut the bass..fade to back..door speakers still pop.

Has anyone tried putting a cap (80HZ or 120HZ) on the stock speakers? Did you cap your door speakers? I was talking to the focal dealer and they said they would cap theirs at at least 80 since the amp drives from 300hz..all the way down...right?

I noticed are in OC NJ...I work in DE a lot, next time im up we will hafta get together and show people there a rare sight, 2 saabs in a row...with BSR!!

From what I understand, it sounds like you are planning on running that focal set off the factory amp. Is that correct? I'm going to have to chime in and play devil's advocate for a second.

First, the door speakers (like all the speakers in the factory system) are eq'd by the factory set up, and you will not get the same sound out of the Focals as a direct replacement as you would on a display or in another vehicle with a full range signal. (There is a graph floating around here with the frequencies the stock speakers cover).

Second, the factory amp is very low power. Those speakers are not going to reach their full potenial until you put much more power into them.

Just something to think about before dropping $400 on an very nice set of speakers.

keep in mind i am just going to be using the drivers...not the cross over and tweeter...I know they will prolly not be as loud as the factory ones..thats a ok with me. They have a 93 sensitivity rating..and are 2 ohm..so as long as they don't pop like stock...i think i will be good. Right now i have the radio faded to the rear some so I can always bring that back once i get some good speakers in.

The focals in question are rated at 80w rms so 40w should run them ok...these are the more effecient, lower power rated of the set..the x2s are rated for more power...which we don't have...I just got the saabcentral mandatory set of boston acoustic 3.5s in so im gonna jump off here and go put those in..see what they sound like.:D

I thought the stock door speakers were sloppy mid-bass drivers. Loud... but sloppy.

The door speakers have very different crossover setups in cars destined for the US market. We are fortunate to have no 4-speaker setups in the US. The 7-speaker cars (150 W "premium") get all the bass sent to the doors. That's 20-250 Hz. The 13-speaker cars (300 W "prestige") get a different setup. In those cars 20-90 Hz gets routed to the rear 6x9's. 90-250 Hz goes to the doors. Coming from someone (that's me) who thinks the 6.5" speakers are sloppy getting 90-250, I can only imagine how "creative" they are getting 20-250 Hz. By "creative" I mean inserting sounds that are not present in the source material. It's not good bass response if the system is adding something that wasn't there to begin with.

There is no point in adding caps to any of the stock speakers. The signals are already split up in an unusal manner by the stock amps. If you want to get into custom crossovers, etc. you really should just run a parallel system and not bother with the stock amps.

Stock frequency routing in the 300 W 13-speaker setup. 7-speaker is same except for 6x9's and 6.5's:

well i opened up my speaker grills for the 3.5s this weekend...guess I should pay closer attention to the posts on here...so the premium stereo does NOT have coaxials...but has seperates...hmmm...well Im sending the BA 3.5s back to crutchfield and am going to tell them to get their stuff straight. They list coaxials on their page...oh well. I do have a set of polk db 4x6 plates which might...might fit. I just wanted a lil brighter sound from the dash. How do you get the tweeter out. And i pulled the 3.5 out...is that all the wire we get to deal with...the connector is still down in the dash...with zero slack

Yeah, we're going on seven straight years here with the Boston 3.5" coaxials as the forum favorite for the front left and right. I've had mine in since 2003 with no issues.

The stock speakers are technically components. The design is questionable. For example, the tweeters have a 1.5 uFd capacitor for a crossover. That works out to a crossover frequency of about 26,500 Hz! I'm all ears if someone cares to enlighten me as to the logic here.
