Does one lubricate the back of the bearing when seating into the journal? I understand that one lubricates the front (inner part of the circle when the bearings are joined). My instinct tells me to lubricate, but I am afraid of clearances with the extra thicknees of the lube/grease.

Put a nice liberal smear of assembly lube on the face of the bearing. Before installation I cut the top off a quart of oil and dunk the piston in for a few seconds. This gets the rings nice and oiled.

If you re-use your old pistons remember to clean the ring grooves well before you put new rings in, otherwise the new rings will get stuck in the piston. I usually break an old ring and use that to clean out the piston grooves. When the engine is done I let it run for about ten minutes then change the oil and filter. If you want to see a sight, cut the filter open and look at all the stuff that gets in the filter after a fresh rebuild. :suprised;
