I keep hearing about Mercedes coolant being the best, that you can use it for the life of the car. Today, I went to the Saab dealer and asked if they had something equivalant. I was told that what Mercedes had was called (sp?) Cooltex or something like it. I was told it is an organic coolant and that if I wanted to switch over that I would have to have a thorough flush and fill. I was also told that I could only use distilled water because ANY contaminant would render the coolant useless.

Has anyone heard of this or have more info?

Organic antifreeze is designed for use with all aluminium alloy engines. That doesn't include our cars because the block's steel. Organic antifreeze is typically red in colour.

Our engines need the usual green antifreeze, designed for mixed metal engines. Mercedes sell that stuff too, and rumour has it that their green goop is similar to Saab's goop.

You might get away with leaving organic antifreeze for forever in an all aluminium engine, but I doubt you you would with a B202. My advice is to use very good antifreeze and service the cooling system at least every two years, but preferably annually.

I second the advice to use distilled water, and that's with whichever antifreeze you choose to put in the engine.

What is in Saab coolant and Benz coolant is a chemical made by BASF called Glysantin G105.

This is what you want, a Glysantin coolant. Benz coolant is said by Townsend to be best, and MB say it have a lot of "anticorrosion AGENT".

Saab coolant, certain VW coolants and even a few offbrands have G105. This is what you want to put in.

The "green ****" is standard ethylene glycol base. This is not optimum for the motors. But they will still work, but headgasket failure is more frequent and likely.

A Saab mechanic recommended the Merc coolant to me! i was surprised at the time but when i read up on it it did seem to be less corrosive and that important for the head gasket, you wont get better cooling that normal water but you wont find a better way of damaging your water channels.

The best thing is somewhere inbetween.
