When putting the top down on my '96 900S Convertible the part that lifts up to allow the top to go into it's stored location get's stuck. I can manually lift the piece just a bit and the motor continues to put the top away.

Any ideas on this? Stripped gears? Motor going? If the motor is going about how much will that cost? If the gears are stripped any idea of cost?

It's not necessarily a stripped gear! The gear will only strip IF you've been having a problem with the tonneau cover (like you are right now) and you continue to open and close it!

It sounds more like you need the Tonneau Bracket Kit fix. Just had mine done a couple of months ago. What happens in there is that a part bends over time making things out-of-alignment.

Check out the instructions for the tonneau reinforcement HERE - thanks once again to GenuineSaab!

The Tonneau Motor bracket kit is SAAB P/N 4613519 - should be about $9.00 RETAIL at the dealership...

Just stop opening and closing it until you fix it, or the bracket reinforcement won't work and you'll be looking at some $$ for repairs!!

Same here!

I'm having problems with my convertible too. I have a 96 900s Conv. and when i press the switch, the backwindow goes up like it's suppose to all the way and then when it's time for the back lid to open up, it opens up about an inch and then it starts to make a horrific noice. It sounds like a creeck and while it's creecking it stalls and kind of shakes. I try to lower it again and then try raising it again. It raises but very loudly as if it's going to break. Everything else works fine. Does anyone know? I'm a new saaber and I love it but I hate what's happening to it right now.

Thanks!

Hi, Did you get this thing done from someone, or did you do it yourself? The instructions seemed pretty complicated so I was wondering if I should attempt it myself. I have the exact same problem, and the dealer is asking me to get the Tonneau Motor changed!! Tells me the total cost (motor+labor) will be around $2000. Dont want to spend that kinda money, if i can help it. I really dont trust that dealer anyways!!

Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

You can do it yourself I did with the help of my cousin it took about 2 hours and there was no need to reprogram the top. Just make sure you put everything back the way it was before and leave the top closed. We just had to bend the hindge back straight, drill the holes bigger and replace the little metal rod and srew in the brackets cost me just $9!

Wow really? That is impressive. I am not too good with mechanics, so do you think I should even try it? The problem is, even the auto repair shops I go to, they say I will need to change the motor or need to change gears etc. No one understands anything about changing brackets. Also, how can I be completely sure that the problem is because of bent bracket?

So, in your opinion, can someone (like me) with not much experience working with car mechanics attempt to do it? Also, where can I find clear instructions to do it (step by step that can be followed). Finally, does it need any particular tools ?

Thanks so much for taking time to reply.

I printed out inscructions from (http://saabsite.com/) click NG900 then click on convertible parts. Scroll down untill you see link to download a PDF file. I believe they sell the part as well.

If your hesitant on trying it yourself I could ask my cousin if he would do it for you cheap. If your willing to drive to NYC (queens) if interested send me a private message.

My dealer tried to talk me in buying a new motor; but after reading this thread I stuck to my guns and asked for the The Tonneau Motor bracket kit is SAAB P/N 4613519. It worked and cost all up less $AU150. I also had a broken hinge over the passenger side window. I was very lucky to one of these up from a wrecker yard. At long last all works well!
