Does this plastic fitting do anything? Mine broke during engine changeover. Seems to shift find without it but seems odd it would be there if it wasn't needed. What does it do? Part# 4282372.

I think it just helps to guide the rod into the shift linkage when everything's being assembled. I broke mine and went several years without it until I found an intact one at a junkyard. Most of the ones I saw were partially broken. I'm sure I didn't need to replace it, but I like everything to be complete.
