Went to a local bodyshop that I have used before, and asked them to quote me to paint and fit 4 x door handles and body mouldings. Well for he came back with the most ridiculous price of £400, yes you read correct £400, and thats is by using my old mouldings, and if I was to supply with handles and mouldings for him to spray only not fit he said £200.

Must think I have just came from the planet zoltan ;oops:

Has anyone had these done on their 9-5, if so how much did it cost them?

I've always fancied this but have never had good results trying to paint plastics, especially textured plastics

Sounds a lot of cash though

Hey I have the answer.......................buy a black car :p

Someone else has asked about the colour coded MY06 handles, would be worth asking your dealer whether they would fit and how much for a set of 4 x silver...?
You never know, even Saab prices may mean they are cheaper than £400.

I have to say though, for the work involved in doing what would be required on your existing door handles, £400 seems quite reasonable actually....

:cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: Agree with regard to painting plastics and the first bejeweled hand to touch the handle is going to take chunks out of the paint too. Also, I'd have too see it in photoshop but isn't it going to look a bit odd, like body coloured windscreen wipers?

That price isn't to bad! I'm an automotive painter so I'll explain the process for you.

I am going to assume you wanted the pieces smooth not textured??

-Sand texture off of the parts with a fairly coarse sand paper(200-320grit)
-Clean parts with plastics parts cleaner to remove the mould release agent used to make the parts
-Spray one light coat of plastic adhesion promoter and let sit for 15-30 minutes
-Spray 2-3 coats of high build primer to fill the sand scratches created from the removal of the texture
-Allow primer to dry
-Sand primer with 320 grit sand paper until smooth
-Sand primer with 600 grit sand paper to remove 320 scratches
-clean with final wipe solvent
-tack off
-apply 3-6 coats of color (different colors cover differently)
-apply 2-3 coats of clear (preferably with flexibilizer added)

Now if you didn't want the texture removed you skip the sanding and priming steps and proceed to cleaning, adhesion promoting, coloring then clearing. (raw plastic does not require a mechanical bond(sanding) but it does require a chemical bond(adhesion promoter)

Just fyi!:D

Saab do sell colour coded door handles from MY06 which will fit these are at a bargain price of £123 each, the mouldings they only sell primed, but there is still problems with the front and rears.

Here is one someone done earlier that inspired the thought.

That is magical, that's what I was looking for too, thanks guys. I'm definately going to be painting my mouldings. Now about handles, can you paint them, or do you have to order them from saab?

Yes, you certainly can paint the handles as well as the mouldings, but the handles can be ordered from Saab pre-painted but at £125 a piece they are not cheap comparably against £12 per handle in black!!!

Doesn't take a genius to work out what option to go for.

How would one go about getting chrome handles? Where would I find someone that does that? Or is that part of a bodykit somewhere?

Oh man, that looks really good on that black car, I wonder how it'd look on a silver one?

But are they chrome? They could be sprayed silver to look chrome, a closer inspection is needed. The black stealth look is killer though. Somebody from the board should do that. ;)
