1985 900 turbo, 300,000 + miles.; engine starts OK; at first, clutch pedal feels 'firm'; shifts into 1st gear OK, but when releasing pressure, the car lurches forward before engaging in gear. Then, may or not be able to shift into other gears, and clutch (foot) pressure feels weak. Fluid levels OK; oil in gear box OK. Any ideas: master cylinder? slave cylinder? clutch unit? Thanks

If no fluid leak, then master is suspect, if there is fluid around the clutch then suspect the slave. A damaged pressureplate assembley can also cause your symptoms, but a master is a cheap, easy place to start. Also check the flex line by the slave, if it is bulgeing under pressure, it can give soft pedel.

master cylinder

Geoff; Thanks for the tip. Automobile still has some useful life in it and replacing the master cylinder would be a straightfoward step. Tony
