Hi,
my climate control system has gone haywire.
the car is a 1999 9-3 Viggen 2 door.

For example, it blows from the bottom and not out the top vents when the top vents are chosen.
Also sometimes it will turn the heater on instead of the air conditioner, although this has only happened a couple of times.

The local saab guy says that he has checked it out and the problem is that I need a new compressor.

I cannot think how a new compressor would fix this issue?
Has he just thought of the most expensive thing he can do to the car?
Or is there some magic mechanism that means if your compressor is not working then the vents will not change properly?

Any advice is welcomed!
cheers,
Greg

Tell the guy that it does the same thing in Econ mode, with the a/c compressor off and ask him to explain; he can't.

I would start by resetting the unit. While ACC is on, hold down 'Auto' and 'OFF' at the same time. The system then goes through a series of electronic and motor/vent checks that takes about fifteen seconds. When it starts, you see only a '0' on the display, and if all is well the zero stays the whole time. If problems are found, the display will change to a '1' for one fault found, a '2' if a second is found, and so on. After the tests finish the display goes back to normal. If you get any fault readings, there's a list on the forum:

No one believes me when I tell them that this fixed my issue. So I have pretty much stopped telling people that. But I will try once more.
I had the same exact problem. Vents would only blow to the floor. Someone here suggested this. I replaced it and... SUCCESS. Complete control restored.

Why does this fix it? I do not know. It did, though.

Thanks for the advice people.

I have reset the computer using the off and auto buttons, a zero comes up indicating no fault.

I have not tried the econ mode yet, but I suspect everything will work as it should.

I have it booked in to a new specialist air con place on Thursday to test it again.
This has to be done since the last place drained all the gas out as they said the system is faulty and they have to do this by law....

I will mention the fan speed controller!

Has anyone else fixed it by replacing this? I hate to spend that kind of money on a crap-shoot.

OK so this is what happened
  1. After getting the quote for a new system I took it to a specialist air con place.
  2. They identified that the magnetic clutch had burnt out on the air con, but a whole new system was needed as they do not sell this part seperately.
  3. The new system was installed, but there were still issues.
  4. I replaced the fan controller. I thought, well if that is stuffed then it would probably burn out the clutch from switching it on and off all the time.
  5. semi conrol is now restored :), but it takes a long time to go from lower vents to upper vents:(. I think I am going to have to pull the vent controllers apart to see what is going on.
I should have started with the fan speed controller as soon as an issue was noticed. Then I might have saved my magnetic clutch...

Getting a controller was a real issue too. I ended up getting one from the UK as it was about half the price of buying one here in Australia.
