I took my car to the dealership the other day for an oil change. When i picked it up and drove home the CHeck ENGINE light came on. Whats the liklihood the oil change had something to do with the Check Engine light? The light had never come on before. That was about 3 days ago. This morning, i started the car and the CHeck Engine light was no longer on. I drove all day and it did not turn back on. I have a 2001 9-5 Areo with 49,300 miles. If there is a problem I would LOVE to find it in the next 700 miles.

Question is, does it sound like its a problem or not? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

People have reported a CEL that comes on and disappears a couple of days later. The garage could have disturbed a sensor while working on the car, and its righted itself. Did you ring the garage? They should have called you back, seeing as it was probably them that caused the CEL in the first place.

well i got the car back on Friday and the light was on all weekend. Yesterday it was no longer on so I decided not the call the garage. Should I or do you think I dont have a problem since the light is off now. I just hate taking stuff to the garage b/c I know without the light on now they will probably want to charge me for a diagnosis.

When the light was on over the weekend i noticed that my fuel efficiency was CRAP. I got a total of 150 miles to the tank instead of my usual 320. I figure now that the light is off and I got a new full tank of gas this morning, I would monitor the fuel consumption to see if its back to normal before calling the garage.

Any thoughts?

I'd have rung them as soon as the CEL came on. If your fuel consumption has doubled, then there's definately something wrong and a fault code will be stored. If things return to normal on this tank, then its probably just a hiccup that righted itself.

If you're having that drastic a decrease in fuel efficiency, take it back! Normally if the light comes on after a repair, it's not always a negative thing. It just needs time to reset itself but if it was a dealer, they should've done it for you. When I had my water pump replaced a couple months ago, the light was on for about 3 days and then went away Same thing on my fiance's Honda Accord. I had disconnected the TPS when doing some work on it which triggered the light. After several days though it went away.

soryr to whore this thread guys

but this light has just come up on mine since i have picked it up from having the CV joint done,

i fitted an airfilter to it on sunday and it ran fine for two days until i took it into the garage , then picjed it up today and the car turned over started then stalled , i took off the battery terminal foir about one minute and fitted the standard airbox back on then took it out for a drive and it came back on

i have just took off the terminal again and im going to leave it overnight and then fit it back on it the morning and start it 1/2 beofre i leave for work and let it idle, then see how it goes

does that sound the right thing to do to you guys,

when i rev the car at a stop it pops a little on run down and it starts like ***! initially but drives fine :?

cheers

Disconnecting for 20-30 minutes should be fine, if after that the check engine light returns then the fault is still there, you then need a dealer or indy with Tech 2 to pull the fault code for you to determine the problem

Jim I seem to remember you have Abbott software in your car.. If you also have the Abbott full exhaust system?? then popping is usual when comming off the gas particularly at higher revs, even more so with this dry weather in the last couple of weeks. However if this is something that has just starting happening then it may indicate that the car is running rich!! If you still have a cat, then maybe the cats gone. Perhaps someone can share any symtoms of a dying cat (& no smart answers please  ) as I am just brain storming..
