What is involved in changing an ignition switch?

This thread is pretty close to describing the situation. How do I go about it?

Can one keep the existing cylinder when swapping out the switch?

This is how you get inside the gearshift housing. And the switch and the cylinder are indeed two separate parts, so you can replace one and keep the other.

Do you still need to do the stuff with the gear shifter and the alignment to swap out the ignition switch?

Yes, You'll need to follow to the point of being able to "rotate" the shifter housing. Make sure you lock in your points on the housing and transmission before loosening the pinch bolt. You will not have to pull anything out, but you need to be able to rotate the housing to access the switch screws.
