ok hands up who bought a lemon?? yup thats me. on the way home today the nearside rear shock parted company with its mounting and thrust itself through the wheelarch. I know its a common problem but can it be fixed once its gone or os it ready for the big scrapper in the sky? just put a brand spanking brake master cylinder on too  alex

They often go rusty round there.

There is no reason to give up on the whole car because of just that though!

In my opinion, anything can be worked on and bought back to roadworthyness!

Either learn to weld, start saving your pennies up, or find a mate with a welder who you can pay in food/beer or something ;)

(which bit of cheshire are you in?)

Im in delamere just by the forest. I have a friend that welds just wasnt sure if its really possible. Ill ask him to take a look then when he gets back from holiday. Itd be a real shame to bin it because apart from that its in pretty good nick.

Anything is possible!

Just make sure that however it is fixed it has some strength in it!. You don't see that part of the car, so it doesnt really matter that much what the repair looks like.
There is a box section that runs along behind the back wheel that the top of the shocker bolts through. This is on the outside of the car, seperated from the inside by a single thickness of metal.
If i were fixing holes round there I would concentrate on replacing the sectional bit with something stronger, and then fix the hole in the metal sheet afterwards.

If that bit of your car is that bad then it is likely to need some attention elsewhere in the near future!, so you should have a good look round elsewhere now.
The bracket just behind the shock where one of the suspension arms that holds the rear axle fixes too is also prone to rotting.

I've not been up to delemere ever, but i sometimes work not far off, in winsford!. Eventually I will find some 99 owners who are actually close to me ;)

Experienced exatly the same problem with my 99 a week after i bought it. Luckily had been given the details of the mechanic who worked on the car and he did the welding, the cars been fine ever since, (coming up on my one year ownage birthday) Didnt cost that much either think it worked out at about 40GBP

Got the mounts welded. Turned out that the other side was just as bad but I just hadnt hit a large enough bump with it yet. All done on both sides for £120 so thatll do. But the monkey putting the shock back on managed to strip the thread on the shock on one side and niether is tight enough. So two brand spanking new sachs shocks are on their way [it kinda needed them anyway].

Soon all will be right with the world....

I must be one of the nearest at about 30 miles! There are a few more around my area however - must be a Derbyshire thing!
