I was looking at my project head and thought the intakes looked small and I figure the engine is an air pump and how much could it flow through such small intake ports?







The gasket is bigger than the intake which made me think I could trim the intake and make it wider and taller so more air could flow or with less resistance right?

I measured the intake and I think its 36mm wide by 28mm tall, I started boring and though I should take a picture so I don't forget.

So I started mashing it up big time with my cobalt titanium boring bit!

from 36mm width I increase it to 42mm and from 28mm in height I incresed it to 31mm.





I know it looks like a mess but this was only to remove the bulk of the bore, I used a 400 grit drum to half polish it off.

You can see the intake ports are much larger even from a distance, I did remove a good amount of material from the inside but not too much to weaken the head walls.








Then I got thinking, it looks much better, maybe I should bore ouot more from the exhaust side which I had already dremmelled out which took 6 hours.

This was the exhaust ports after dremmelling, I used 8 drums and 20 cutting discs to grind the exhaust ports, in this picture I had already started boring on one of the ports.

The exhaust side is almost the same size as the air intake, 36mm by 28mm, can anybody confirm this? I went mental on the exhaust side and made it 46mm wide and 32mm tall,

I had done a nice job here but I wanted more.







Thank God I bought some decent quality mole grips because remove the exhaust studs was not happening without them.



I even made Aero vain for the exhaust gas, lol

Have I been wasting my time or does the 9000 head have bigger intakes and exhaust ports? or is the 9000 just a better head all round without going boring mad?

I'm hoping this helps the exhaust gas flow or expand faster and maybe give me more burble, :)

Man I haven't a clue what I'm doing:lol: I just like using power tools and making lots of noise;)

Well I got this idea after seeing a guy from works engine head, he bought it from Yahoo auctions.

It came with some paper work saying its will flow X amount of air compared to the standard engine, like it meant anything to me.

Here is a before and after shot, is this all boring is? or I'm I missing something? its takes a long time to do and will probably give me carpel tunnel syndrome so I'm not keen on doing this again and again.

Yep, I'm not even a Butcher, I'm an apprentice butcher:lol:

Like I said I have no idea what I'm doing or how this will affect the engine, it just seems like a good idea and I don't remember anybody mentioning this before.

I want to do this to the head thats on my car right now, its just getting the exhaust manifold off is a nightmare and those threaded bolts will get mashed up, There is one snapped off and stuck in the hole and I can't drill it out, I even used a Piranha drill bit and it snapped:eek:, its some kind of sick grade 12.8 bolt.

Really great work Sha. I always port my openings whenever I can. One gets a chance to match and optimize opening sizes. If nothing else at least one can "polish" the raceways. On my turbo re-build I just got through finishing, I was able to increase various openings by 10%-15%. When I find my boost, I'll let you know how it worked.

On my two-stroke engines I perform a laborious process called blue printing, where one uses sand/silicone to fill the various "ports" and then you grind/form the ports to have the same volume/weight of sand/silicone. In theory this is a way of insuring similar volumetric flow through each piston.

Whole inches are fine, its the 1/32 and 1/16 of an inch that don't me squat to me:confused:

Danial is that Somender Singh guy for real with his turbulence theory?

There are no pictures or diagrams of what he is doing, I'm desperate to know what he is doing to increase turbulence.

I notice the Saab intake has 1 large intake port on the right valve and 1 smaller port on the left valve, the only reason for doing this is to swirl the air inside the compression chamber, this create turbulence at the edge but not in the core or column in the chamber, still I have no idea what the detonation or expansion characteristic of the explosion is like in our B202 engines and what a modification would improve it, I'm up for anything;)

waste of time. Get 2.1L head and there you go. Exhaust side port is waste of time, ports are ok for turbocharged car, you don't want too big exhaust ports on a turbo car because you need that velocity for spool up. Just ask around and they will confirm what I said

the UK never got the 2.1na engine, so that makes getting hold of one for a turbo project a bit hard - if only it were as simple :roll:

Rasmus (the guy with the lada) is a fun guy, mad project, hehe. Been helping him a bit with MS, quite fun... Haven't been in the car yet, hopefully I will sometime during the summer.

Sha - I think it's funny how you all call it "Imperial" - over here we call it "American" :lol: And I think 5/8" sounds much cooler than so and so millimeters...

You can probably get the same results as a 2.1 if not better from porting. I haven't done any myself, but I am pretty sure SD when they do their "red series heads" (which are ridiculously expensive btw) they start with a 2.0. You have to work with what you got ;) You have a good point about the exhaust ports, there.

But we did get the B234 heads on the -->94 9000s, which are the same as the B212 :D
