Battery Light Glows....This Just in....Now it's Died!.

hi,

last night on the way home I noticed a slight glow on the battery light while at idle.....first time I've seen it and it's not bright enough to notice in daylight. As a matter of fact I had to turn the Dashlights down to really see it. It goes out upon acceleration, revving or normal driving and there's no change in Headlight brightness when I rev at idle and it goes out...

So, Battery dying or Alternator? Opinions welcome.

Thanks in advance,

J

Check connections to battery and alternator, and don't forget connections amongst these pieces in the wiring harness.

I had a similar problem to yours, and a sharp mechanic traced it to a burned connection in the fusebox, on the underside where all the wires terminate on tabs going to the fuses. The connection for the wire going to the battery light was cooked.

From a Glow to Death....

Started her up fine this morning turned on the AC, drove about 1.5 miles, felt it cough....thenTach needle was bouncing to 5-6k, but not actually revving more than normal, also the temp gauge started bouncing, engine cutting out. When it stalled, the battery was dead, I restarted with my Battery/Compresser Pack, ran about another mile and same thing, repeat the restart and made it to the local mechanics station (not Specialist) and it died as I pulled in. No Mech on today as it's Sunday...Just a Pumper.

I need help with this one, in the past year and a half I have put over 7k US into mechanical repair and replacement, I'm afraid this might be the straw that breaks......I dont think I can deal with anymore.

Jezz,

Thanks for that thread, great info. BTW the saabcentral link doesnt seem to exist anymore. The Car is sitting at a shop right now, and to be honest I'm not that strong of a DIY'R plus I have a bit of a disability that limits me.

I'll pass that info on to the Shop guy, I dont use the local Saab Specialist that I had been using after a couple of times he did unauthorized parts replacement and extra Labor, not to mention I got him for charging me for OEM parts when he was using aftermarket.

I've got to set a limit on how much more I can put into this 900, hopefully this time it's no worse than a voltage regulator.

Thanks again,

John

Thanks for that patch Matthew, Hopefully, since all my symptoms are the same/similar as what I've been reading about, the Ground wire is hopefully the Problem.

Cheers,

Update...

Yes the Ground wire from the Alt was cooked, and the Alternator was on it's last go round. Replacing it with a Re-Maned. Fair Deal too, 300 US for the Rebuilt and Labor. Should get it back Wed. Afternoon.

Thanks fo the help...

Jon,

Hope the mechanic has replaced an alternator on a 900 before, as there's a technique to getting the bottom bolt out, involving swinging the bracket down.
