I just read somewhere (think from Maptun) that with the automatic, the tuning kit will not go beyond 400NM if you have an automatic, to protect the gears or something like that. Is that correct? If so, it's almost useless to upgrade my stock 04 Aero.

I believe you are correct. Us auto tranny wimps will be limited to 400nm with "stock" software from MapTun. At least that's what I was told when I took the plunge.

I'm sure the software could be surreptiously tweaked even further if you want to quickly transform your tranny into an expensive pile of mangled, twisted, oily metal, rubber, plastic, and teflon.

Yes and no....maybe:roll:

Yes they do say that, Maptun and Hirsch limit to 400Nm (Saab's rated torque capacity of the gearbox), Nordic limit to 420Nm.
However, I was under the impression that the torque limit was applied to the 1st and 2nd gears only (i.e drive through the torque converter I pressume), but as the autobox has a mechanical lockup on 3rd, 4th and 5th, it will be the same torque limit as per the manual.......

But that maybe me misunderstanding the whole thing....:p

That all depends an what you want out of the upgrade I suppose.

Makes sense to me, so you'd notice the power after 2nd gear ;)

max torque u will reach in any gear in the auto will be 400nm or 420nm dependant on software... in first and second there is a boost limit, that is why there is less torque.... so in 3rd 4th 5th u will get 400nm or 420nm...

Looks like Hirsch locks it to 400nm.

Power/Torque (Auto)
250 HP / 350 Nm
280 HP / 400 Nm
310 HP / 400 Nm

Power/Torque (Man)
250 HP / 350 Nm
280 HP / 400 Nm
310 HP / 440 Nm

I think I'll do the Hirsch Step 2, just to be safe :D. I am sure Maptun, Nordic and others are cheaper and maybe as good as Hirsch - but I am paranoid .
