I just purchased a 1991 900S automatic and am in the process of giving the car some overdue preventive maintenance, belt, hoses, filters, fluid changes, etc, and in the process of replacing the lower radiator hoses I can't help but wonder about the water cooled transmission fluid cooler. Do these "wear out"? Just concerned where there is water and transmission fluid in close proximity. With this cooler no longer available has anyone replaced it with a conventional transmission oil cooler?

They don't normally fail. Marine engines use coolers like that and I put one in my 900. It had a turbo swapped in but they didn't put in the engine oil cooler. Since mine is a stick, I put the oil cooler in place of where your trans cooler is.
A long way to say don't worry about it, and if need be there are coolers you can use in the marine market to do the exact same thing.

I guess they are pretty popular. A good find and an even better resource considering the OEM one is NLA.
