Hi all,

Forgive me in advance, I'm no master mechanic and electrical stuff tends to go over my head.

I own a 1997 Saab 900S 2.3L. Over the summer my alternator locked up on a trip and I was towed the rest of the way there. I spent several days of that trip running back and forth to Advance Auto, but that's besides the point. After getting the new alternator installed and replacing my belt and a pulley, I fired the car up thinking everything was cool again. Well, it wasn't.

When it started, the battery light remained lit on the dash, and the warning light (the one with the triangle around ! ) flickered, and the car kept dinging like it does when that light first illuminates. We checked and the battery was charging fine. Confusing.

I can't remember how we came to this decision, but my brother and I decided to run a new ground wire directly from the battery to the alternator. Started the car afterwards and everything seemed fine. Took it to dinner that night and ended up pushing the car into my driveway by the end of the night because it died. We had neglected to see if the battery was charging, and it wasn't. So we put the old ground wire back on, the lights came back on, it dinged a lot, but it charged. To deal with this, I pulled the fuse that goes to the radio lights and dinger and whatever else, and that made my ride quiet again.

Fast forward a few months: I got to playing around with the fuses again, and I can't remember which one I pulled and replaced but when I put all the fuses back I started the car and something changed. It didn't ding anymore except for once on initial start up, the battery light was still illuminated, the ( ! ) light stayed lit constantly, and now the SRS light is on!?

The car operates just fine, all the fuses are good, and I run the car daily. It bothers me to have those lights on in the dash though, and I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas what this could be about. Sorry if anything is unclear, please let me know if this is the case!!!

Thanks,
Jake

Check the wiring (and connection on the alternator) of the thin wire, this is what the car uses to determine if the alternator is working correctly and the display the battery warning if necessary. Without it connected the battery actually will charge and the car will be fine, but the car will think there is a problem and display the battery warning.

I think the SRS light is a coincidence. When you put the fuses back in properly you powered up the circuit for it and the light lit.

You'll need to find someone with a Tech II to read out the code from it and figure out what needs to be repaired... and after repair, to reset it.
